The Hamilton Inn – Jersey City
A reason to leave Hoboken: Hamilton Inn Jersey City
You should know the owner: Mike Gondevas
In case you didn’t know – The Hamilton Inn is owned by longtime restaurant figure in Hoboken, Michael Gondevas, who was managing partner for many establishments in town under Dave Carney (Madison, The Jefferson (gone), and the Clinton Social).
Gondevas branched out on his own, and along with his brother went on acquire the Jersey City corner bar/restaurant – completely gut-renovating it. They did a great job, and it has the look and feel of a comfortable place to become a regular. Accommodating staff and bartenders – along with the diverse and friendly patrons, we immediately felt welcome even though it was our first time there.
In a hurry – we didn’t pound drinks at the bar, but instead sat at one of the outdoor tables for a “rushed” dinner (before Home Depot closed).
Quick review bullets:
Crab Cake Appetizer. Small portion, probably not sufficient for full meal. But crab cakes were perfect and the chipotle lime dipping sauce was out of this world. We should have asked for extra to dip fries from burger in. $12 (a bit steep, but the taste made it worthwhile).
I wanted to try the crispy buffalo wings, but wasn’t in the mood for sloppy finger food. Will go back another nice day and sample some other items on the menus (see below) – and stay for some night-caps.
Overall – the general vibe of The Hamilton Inn was just what the doctor ordered, and made us wish a restaurant like this existed in Hoboken. What was missing was the “Mile Square scene” – and was one of Hamilton Inn’s strengths. A decent, non-pretentious trip across the border that we’ll certainly make again. Recommended.
