Reader Mail: Emergency Vehicle Parking

7/27/2010:

Private car ticketed; Hoboken PD & FD not

Hoboken411 reader bmacqueens brings up the age old question of parking offenses by private citizens vs. city employed emergency workers.

“These were taken last Friday night, around 7:30, within one minute of each other, all at the corner of 12th and Washington. The cop car – obviously parked in the bus stop. The fire dept. SUV – obviously double parked. This poor bastard – on 12th street in a resident-only (green sign) zone. Maybe that was his offense?

But, you can be sure that nobody ticketed the cop or fire dept. truck. Ah, just another day in justice-filled Hoboken.”

Question of the Day: Should on-duty emergency personnel (Police, Fire) be exempt from parking violations? Or should they waste valuable time looking for parking like the rest of us?

I see no mention if the officers were on a call. Does anyone know, did anyone ask? did anyone see? Well if that is the case how can you expect them to look for a spot when duty calls for them to take action. time spent looking for a parking spot is less time spent responding on calls.
As for their meal breaks. Parking a car a block or two away legally makes no sense if they need to run out two or three blocks to reach their legally parked car.
As for parking all over corners, that is an absolute lie and a typical jackazz who was on the receiving end of a ticket or anything else wrong they did and blame the PD>

They should be exempt. Most people get a break from work and get up away from their desk. Well the cop car is their desk. Id rather them double park and take their 20 minutes to eat something double parked . rather Than have them park 4 blocks away legally so when an emergency comes in over the radio and their car isn’t rt in front of where they are. Instead valuable time is wasted for them to get to their car and than to the emergency. How does that make any sense. Time is key for cops and fireman.

Personal cop and fireman vehicles are a different story.

And what would be the point. If you gave a ticket. Hoboken would be paying Hoboken.

Also by double parking, they actual save spots. if they went and found a legal spot, that would be one less spot for you. Smarten up people stop being 2 yrs old..why does he get to do it and I cant waaaaaahhhhh.

Great point. I can just see the headlines “HOBOKEN COP CAR PARKS IN LEGAL SPOT — RIOTS BEGIN”. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

Was the guy on 12th parked illegally?

I’ll admit — I tend to turn a blind eye to police/fire/EMS vehicles and their locations, unless they are really inconveniencing someone.

These guys are busting their humps to keep us safe and if they need to double park to grab a snack, so be it.

Since the city is already taking away parking with the “corner cars,” why not just take away more, and create “corner cop spots” too?

I guess one of the benefits of firing cops and firemen will be more parking. Probably safer intersections without fire and cop cars parked everyday in the crosswalks all over town(looking in your direction fat slob cops parked in the crosswalk while eating breakfast AND lunch in Luca Brasis)
