Still no other shoe repair guys besides them in Hoboken!

Giovanni D’Italia shoe repair in Hoboken, NJ to move after 52 years

4/11/2012 Update:

Here’s some big retail news for Hoboken! The Giovanni D’Italia shoe repair shop at 700 Garden Street is on the move!

After 52 years in the same location – they’re moving two blocks west to the old M. Avery Designs spot at 266 7th Street (corner of 7th and Willow).

M. Avery relocated back to where she came from originally – over at the Monroe Center (720 Monroe St.) Apparently her customers received so many parking boots and tickets that it actually hurt business, so the free parking lot at the Monroe Center was reason enough to move back.

As far as Giovanni’s – they’re selling the building, and were looking for a bigger space – since they outgrew their store a long time ago.

Funny anecdote from the owners: Did you know that many years ago there were over a dozen shoe repair shops – and only ONE dry cleaner in the whole city? The complete opposite now, as Giovanni’s is the ONLY shoe repair shop in Hoboken, and we have like 100 dry cleaners! Funny how things change (along with the quality and # of shoes people actually own). They just don’t make ’em like they used to!

The move is expected to take place in May 2012 – and the shop may be closed for a couple weeks while they make the transformation. Good luck, guys!

The fact that they have been opened for 52 years makes me feel very old, I worked across 7th st in Sid gordon’s liquor store when they opened.

Residents of 7th & Willow will now get to ‘enjoy’
the dog…their method of walking is to let it crap
right in middle of sidewalk, then just hose the
steaming pile into the street. No need to pick
it up.

These guys aren’t limited to just shoes.

A few years back I needed a zipper replaced on a leather jacket. Gave them the business. Well, that replacement has outlasted the original AND its first replacement performed elsewhere. Price and timing were well within reason and expectation.

When my next need arises (doubtful it will be that jacket), I will not hesitate to go back.

Anyway, my $.02.

One thing I do like is the excellent treatment here. I might also point out that I have noticed in several small business I frequent that they treat the good customers well and maybe the others well …. they should take a hint.

I must say that I HATE using them because they are keeping that poor, suffering dog (the boxer) alive, but it is apparently the only game in town. I am SUCH an animal lover and can’t even look over at that dog when I am there……UGH!
