3/10/2011 Update:

Kitchen Nightmares is back in the Hoboken / NYC tri-state area again looking for a perfect dumpy restaurant to cast for their upcoming season. Read the post from last summer below – and email Lisa at twinsworld1@aol.com to be considered!

Fox TV looking for Kitchen Nightmares candidates

7/13/2010:

Every season, producers from Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares reality show starring Gordon Ramsay embark on a quest to find the best (worst) restaurant for the program.

And for the upcoming season, they’re searching the entire NYC Tri-State area looking for that perfect dump of an eatery that fits the show’s model: Mismanagement (i.e., partner squabbles), staffing issues, food quality and outdated decor.

Since Hoboken is in the area, they reached out to Hoboken411 to spread the word:

Reserved for last resort establishments

I spoke with several restaurant owners in and outside of Hoboken – and they advised that it’s NOT a good idea to be on this program, unless you’ve exhausted ALL other opportunities to bring your restaurant back from the brink of ruins. So it has to be a place that is suffering financially. Because not only will the show make the restaurant owner(s) look bad – you have to PAY for the renovations as well.

I can’t think of any places in Hoboken that meet the requirements. Because even some of the dumpier places in town – are still crowded despite the “recession” we’re in. And the two places that I might have suggested (The Mile Square and O’Donoghue’s) already have new high-profile owners taking over.

Looking to ride the Hoboken Wave?

Certainly the producers of the show would love to have a Hoboken establishment on the show – to possibly ride the popularity of the Cake Boss as well as the large television viewing audience that would tune in because of the proximity to New York.

Frankly, I think 90% of the reason any Hoboken restaurants are currently sub-par – is the quality of the staff. From what I gathered speaking with owners, their number one issue is keeping staff. Having a high turnover, even with wages on the high-end of the spectrum, makes it difficult to maintain consistency. You’ll see that from the places where the owners, or staff are there for years – the service is markedly better. Ironically, one of the owners said he visited one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants overseas – and had a terrible experience. It’s what happens when you don’t have capable people running the show when you’re not there!

What restaurant is on the brink of failure here in Hoboken? What place fits the Kitchen Nightmares model?

“even with wages on the high-end of the spectrum”

That’s a laugh. Have you asked any servers in Hoboken what they make in an average week? Not enough to rent an apartment in Hoboken!

Any decent waiter will give up on Hoboken and look for work in Manhattan to make a decent living.

If City Hall was a restaurant, hands down, it would be perfect for this show.

Buskers. The food and service have really been on the decline there in the last few years.

Too bad Arthur’s is a chain. I’d send him there! Steaks are great only some of the time, some other times they’re burnt cuts of fat. The whole joint could be flipped and cleaned too! I’ll still eat there though, because when the steak is right, its friggin awesome 😀
