Down To Earth: Doomed

10/1/2010 Update:

Crash Down to Earth

A quick doomed biz update today – I had forgotten to revise this entry for the Down to Earth clothing store at 527 Washington Street. Not sure if they were forced out by surging rents, or just couldn’t sustain in this economy any longer. Website gone, too.

Rumor has it that some folks looking to put in a Chinese food place were poking around the property.

Description: Casual clothing for men and women. Vacant Hoboken Storefront.
Services:
Website: www.downtoearthhoboken.com (URL invalid)
Address: 527 Washington St, Hoboken, NJ 07030
Telephone: 201-656-7766

Sorry to see them go, but not really surprised. We’re a bus or train ride away from better prices and selection. I don’t see how most of these Hoboken boutiques stay in business.

It seems that small retail clothing stores just don’t work well in Hoboken. Maybe it’s a guy thing but when I need something I go to the store I know has exactly what I want and buy it or I order it online. I don’t browse and waste time “shopping” a series of boutiques. There’s nothing wrong with them and I have no interest in seeing another nail place or realtor but it almost bums me out more when I see a new place open that seems doomed from the start.

This store occupied the space since at least 1997. It was a nice place.

Another Chinese take-out store? Wonderful. Why not rename Washington Street Martin Luther King Blvd? Given the number of chicken, Chinese and nail joints, that is where we are headed. We still need a couple of check cashing and liquor stores to complete the effect![quote comment=”198205″]This store occupied the space since at least 1997. It was a nice place. This was a nice store. I’ve gotten a few things from here over the years. They closed quite suddenly. There was no notice. It’s a shame. I’ll miss them. Oh Joy! another Chinese restaurant. I suppose that’s better than a nail salon, real estate agency, bank,or cell phone store. I love Hoboken. I’ve been here awhile. The uniqueness and town gems are disappearing. It’s quite sad.

Some really nice stuff (Carries Ben Sherman and Lacoste among others) Only downside is the selection is a bit limited, but worth a look. The staff are friendly (and pretty) too.
