Hoboken Summer of Doom

6/21/2010:

Summer Starts in Hoboken; some businesses end

At 7:28am this morning – Summer officially begins!

With that being said – here are two business updates for retail establishments that are gone, or will soon be vacating the Mile Square:

Gothic Cabinet liquidating & regrouping

Hoboken411 reader Jeff sent in this tip about Gothic Cabinet Craft Furniture (216 Washington) yesterday – and was a bit bummed that they’re wrapping up in town, saying the furniture was well made – and “better than IKEA crap.” The owners said they’re “temporarily” closing all New Jersey stores, and will come back as something more “upscale” in late 2011 – but it’s unlikely they’ll be back in Hoboken. Liquidation sale now in progress.

Basement shops don’t do well in Hoboken

This subterranean space at 728 Washington Street never seems to do well – and Elegantly F.L.I. is the latest casualty.

Midtown Authentic consignment shop now resides in this spot. We’ll see how long this lasts.

Aw, man! I’m kinda bummed about Gothic. We have a couple of really well-made pieces of furniture from them that are aging very well…

Good luck to those who are relocating (Midtown).

Yes pawz we have moved for greener pastures. The old spot was a “feel out the town” situation I guess one would say? See if the response from the community is there, even in the sticks, and it was. We have more things coming in so a bigger and more visible spot.

I saw about 12 places in town that were for rent, most on main drag and some just off. For everyone’s info FYI did not go out of business, she moved to the south to be closer to family, she did fine here. I just took over the existing lease.

The shop is a great addition to the community. I had people today from Hacketstown (spelling?) that read about us online and came here to just check out the store. This is great, these people will also spend dollars at other merchants.

Hobokendave is correct with online sales. I encourage any stores in town to contact me for any help in setting up online for their businesses, my help is always free of charge.

Thanks NachoGrande for the good luck nod.

Midtown, I noticied you took over Elegantly F.L.I.’s space. “Good Luck!” Did you move? or do you still have your other space as well?

Midtown Authentic sells its merch online too, so they are more likely to survive there than businesses that need walk in customers.

Good luck to Midtown Authentic in their new subterranean lair! I think they will do well since it is an established business, as opposed to a generic nail/realtor/tan/cell store.
Midtown Authentic sells its merch online too, so they are more likely to survive there than businesses that need walk in customers.
