Peter Cunningham’s latest tirade

6/11/2010:

More Hoboken411 Political Analysis: Peter Cunningham

Peter Cunningham’s temper got the best of him during the election of Democratic party committee seats this week.

Cunningham is a lifelong Republican who switched parties for political convenience and influence.

At least he’s an equal opportunity political turncoat.

As a Republican running for council he told Democrats he voted for John Kerry for President, but as a Democrat running for committeeman he also let it slip that he voted for Republican Chris Christie for Governor. That got some lifelong Democrats peeved, so they mounted a campaign to write in the name of the committeeman Cunningham was seeking to replace:

How did Cunningham react to the audacity of those who thought a lifelong Republican shouldn’t be elected to the Democratic committee? Well, the same guy who infamously said the only reason anyone would dream of running against Dawn Zimmer for Mayor would be for “their ego” got mad and hit the “send” button.

“It has been brought to our attention that the standard bearers of corrupt Hoboken politics are trying to mount a “write in” campaign against our democratic colleagues in Column B. This is their last stand, and as thought, they will not go quietly. Many absentee ballot applications have been submitted to the County to support their candidates in various Districts and they will be pulling out the vote all day today.

They are NOT wanted and there’s NO place for them in Hoboken politics anymore. It is most critical that you find the time to cast your vote (at the very least Democratic Committee) for candidates under Column B.”

– Peter Cunningham

Not very democratic of this newly minted Democrat. The reaction was swift. Not only had Peter Cunningham pronounced anyone who dared to run against the Zimmer-aligned candidates for committee, he called them corrupt and said there is no place for them in Hoboken. Kinda sounds like he wants to grind the opposition into powder, doesn’t it?

Cunningham manages to anger many

Who dared to run against Zimmer’s HCDO line and therefore, according to Cunninham, is corrupt? Well, there’s Ricky Mason and Gretchen Brigden, Ines Garcia-Keim and Jason Maurer, and the list goes on and on. Real Democrats who sought to support their national party in a local volunteer position. Cunningham sounds more like his fellow Republcan (at the time) George W. Bush who said to the world, “You’re either with us, or against us.” In Cunningham’s Hoboken, you’re either with Zimmer, or you’re part of Al Qaida and must be run out of his own little Fifth Ward Fallujah.

Democratic Committeeman John Castellano won his seat on Tuesday without Zimmer’s blessing, and offers his view of the divisive situation in this letter.

Opposition may be mounting in the 5th ward

Cunningham has long been known as someone who has no interest in suffering through people who have a different view of things. One-on-one he’ll yes them to death and hope they forget the conversation. The problem for Cunningham today is they aren’t forgetting, and nearly three years into his tenure he’s losing influence in his own ward. The loss of 5th ward allies Ann Graham, Brian Assadourian, Ann Marie Bonner and Sandra Reinardy on Tuesday sent a message that Cunningham’s opposition is motivated.

And just for laughs, here’s another shot of Cunningham’s often illegally parked SUV:

What do you think? Is Cunningham vulnerable if he runs for re-election in May? Comment below.

I heard about John Castellano’s letter but it took me a little while to find it here. It is really good and confirms what I had heard about the divisive tactics that took place. I hope the majority of the commiteepeople reject that rhetoric, regroup and allow cooler heads to prevail for the good of the party and the community.

“They are NOT wanted and there’s NO place for them in Hoboken politics anymore. ” … Did Cunningham actually write this? If so, the ignorance is stunning!!!! I hold hope that Hoboken will stop this “us ” versus “them” drama and that for once a politician will have an independent plan/opinion to build from.

What is Peter’s claim to fortune? Lawyer?

The last few council meetings I’ve watched on 78 he has become even more obnoxious and condescending than our infamous 22-day Mayor.

He’s a salesman, muni bonds. This is why he was called out at the last council meeting as having a potential conflict.[quote comment=”193462″]What is Peter’s claim to fortune? Dear 411,

Please find copy of the flyer I distributed to Democrates in Ward 5 District 2 at 5:30 on Monday June 7th. For this purpose the name is redacted.
H is a very hard working Democratic Committee Man.
Peter Cunningham is seeking to replace H.
Peter admitted voting for Chris Christie.
Christie, a Republican, screwed Hoboken out of $33,000,000.00! That’s Millions with an M
A Democratic Committee candidate should not vote for a Republican Governor.
On Tuesday I am writing in H.
You should too.

Thank you,
Perry Belfiore

Cunningham’s vituperative rejoinder appeared in an email on Tuesday June 8th at about 9AM.

He is very vulnerable. They have completely shut everyone out, not just enemies, but anyone who is not in their crew. They are allowing all the varying groups of opposition and the casual observer to band together. The 5th ward committee seats are a direct indication of things to come if they do not change. Those people didn’t lose to a very organized group. They lost to the many neighbors who are upset.
