Hoboken Bike Registration and Safety Program

6/9/2010:

Bicycle Registration and Safe Kid Program Day June 19th

“On Saturday, June 19, 2010, the Hoboken Police Department’s Community Policing Bureau will be hosting a bicycle registration day for residents of Hoboken from 9am until 1pm at the Police Department’s 2nd Precinct parking lot at 310 Jackson St. The purpose of this is to encourage people to register their bikes and to help with the prevention of bicycle theft. This will also assist the police department with the identification of bicycle theft.

In addition Officers William ‘Chubby’ James, Joseph Cahill and James Barbro will be conducting the Safe Kid Think Positive program which is a helmet safety program. This program encourages the use of helmets while riding a bike. Safe Kids Worldwide is the first and only international nonprofit organization dedicated solely to preventing unintentional childhood injury. Children ages 1 to 14 years of age die from injuries sustained in accidents such as: motor vehicle accidents, bike accidents, drowning and falls, more than any other cause. Almost all of these incidents are preventable.

This event is being sponsored by the following organizations: Brain Injury Association of New Jersey, Inc., Liberty Health-JC Medical Center, Safe Kids-Hudson County Chapter, Johnny Rockets, Rita’s Italian Ice, Ralph’s Famous Ices, Mister Softee Ice Cream, and the Hoboken Police Department’s Community Policing Unit.

Think Positive, a helmet safety award program will be in effect from June 19th through the end of October 2010. Anytime a child is seen wearing a helmet, a coupon will be given with a choice of free Rita’s Italian Ice, Johnny Rockets, Ralph’s Italian Ice or Mister Softee Ice Cream, ices or small sundaes.

Prior to the Think Positive Helmet campaign, a pre- and post- data collection will be taken in various parks in the city. For any questions in reference to this event, please contact P.O. James or P.O. Cahill at 201-222-7620.

This is the second year that the event is being conducted. Last year the event was held at Maxwell Place Park in the Spring and Church Square Park during the Fall.”

Do you have to show all the “points” of legal presence documents to register your bike like when you go to the DMV? If so, all those bikes will have MD and MA registrations!

While you’re collecting that data, take into consideration the kids riding with their helmets on when the parents wear no protection. And how about the parents who regularly allow their kids to playi unattended on a fifth floor balcony, yet insist that they wear helmets because their is a fine? Helmets don’t substitute for poor parenting.

Best way to teach your kids anything is for you to do it.

Never in my life have my parents said, “Do as I say not as I do.” I’m going to make sure my daughter never has call to say it either.[quote comment=”193364″]While you’re collecting that data, take into consideration the kids riding with their helmets on when the parents wear no protection.
