NYC Fleet Week 2010

5/22/2010:

Huge military presence to overtake NYC Tri-state area!

Did you know that the 2010 Fleet Week in NYC starts on Wednesday?

Thousands of U.S. Troops will invade the NYC Tri-state area! Expect to see many men and women in uniform also visiting Hoboken during the week as well, because NY Waterway is allowing the Military to RIDE FREE during fleet week! They’ve kept that tradition for the past 23 years. Free rides include both commuting ferries around the city (and to Hoboken – wink wink) as well as sightseeing tours as well (although reservations are strongly recommended.)

What is Fleet Week?

Since 1984, New York City has held Fleet Week to honor the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The week features extensive military demonstrations, as well as the opportunity for the public to tour some of the visiting ships. The Memorial Day commemoration is a highlight of the week’s festivities, featuring the singing of Taps and a military aircraft fly over in honor of those who lost their lives in service to the United States.

What Is There To Do During Fleet Week?

  • Tour visiting ships
  • lectures
  • watch the parade of ships in the harbor
  • watch competitions, including tug of war and eating contests
  • Memorial Day ceremony
  • musical performances by sailors and marines

If you see a serviceman or servicewoman at a bar, buy them a drink and bless them.
