Maggie’s Place

4/7/2008:
Anyone ever hang out at “the bar formerly known as El Cuatro Bar?”
This large space is currently up for sale (I think it’s in the high 1MM’s.) I had stopped by there a few months ago, and never got around to updating the entry.. They had cheap beer (and cheap everything else), but it wasn’t that horrible. Quiet and pretty much like the dive bars 10 years ago used to be.
Certainly would be nice if someone bought Maggie’s Place and spruced it up a bit… What do you think the building is worth in this market? Beers most likely wouldn’t be 3 bucks anymore, that’s for sure.
Description - Local bar, with alcohol, pool table, toilets.
Address - 87 Jefferson St, Hoboken, NJ 07030
Telephone - 201-659-9509

Went there once or twice when I lived in the area…even considered putting a group together to buy them out in my youthful foolishness. Got as far as putting together some pro-forma income statements for the “venture” and realized it was a terrible idea.

Geez I live in the area and don’t even recall Maggie’s Place or El Cuatro. If I’m of the norm, then maybe that’s why it’s for sale…no impact on the consciousness.
However, based on 411 photos and description, if you buy the place you get a “Local bar, with alcohol”!!! Also “toilets” thank god, no peeing in the streets. Is the paper towel roll included in the purchase price?

nothing gets my pants off faster than a frozen drinks machine

If you live on the block, which I do, you know Maggie’s Place because of the line of cars double-parked. Always a good idea to mix alcohol consumption with parking violations. Note: This post was NOT meant as a slam at the bar. The owners have done everything possible to discourage the double-parking. I’ve been in there a couple of times and been treated very well, so I have no beef with this place at all.

For sale? Damn. If you haven’t tried this place, give it a go, but leave the “Lehigh Lacrosse” hat and the Delta House attitude at home. Drinks are cheap and the competition on the slate is pretty good, for Hoboken.

I’ve been looking to check this place out for some time, I love a good dive!

How much for the roll of paper towels?

I will miss El Cuatro. I was only there a couple of times for parties, and Enrique and his staff were always great. The guys playing dominoes was a slice old Hoboken. I wonder where those regulars will go now.

I think its still the same owners….they just changed the name to fleece some yuppies.
Last time I was in there, which was a few years ago, they were still playing dominos.

I’m guessing those are old pictures, considering the ashtrays on the bar?

Also, why “spruce it up”? Looks fine to me as is.
Sprucing it up would make it into just another typical Hoboken bar. Not everything has to gravitate inevitably toward that common denominator.

I agree. I like the place and the people who run it. The only bad thing is the entire block of double-parked cars, but again, I don’t blame the bar for that.

definitely agree doesn’t need ’sprucing up’ as that would mean the prices would get ’spruced up’ too.

A bar in that location almost HAS to remain a neighborhood bar, though. No one who doesn’t live in the area is going to drag their ass to Jefferson between Newark and 1st, especially because there’s not much else around there — just the soon-to-be-renamed Quiet Woman.

the bar also draws some rowdy crowds. i live in the front of the building (we determined we lived in the same building right?) so i hear the noise. the double parking is a problem for sure. i don’t know why cops just don’t drive down our street and ticket away on evenings.

something went down at Maggie’s Place around midnight last night…4 police cars (totaling 8 cops, from what I could see) and a whole lotta commotion. A woman screaming in spanish about her father?? All I know is: 1) someone was definitely taken away in handcuffs and 2) Hoboken cops really like to speed while driving, even when they have limited space in which to do so
