ABC Channel 7 off the air on Cablevision

3/7/2010 Update:
Watch the Oscars LIVE
In case any of you Cablevision subscribers want to watch the Oscars – here’s one of many places you can watch! (this is a better feed of the real Oscars – not the “red carpet” seen below…)
Red Carpet nonsense
ABC pulls plug after failing to reach deal with Cablevision
You’ll have to either switch to another provider – or get a (gasp) TV antenna to watch Channel 7 at the moment.

Thanks kellyjoy and homeworld! I was watching a bootleg internet feed but turned the TV back on when I saw your posts!

According to ABC7’s site there has been “significant progress” in the negotiations with Cablevision, so they are allowing all ABC’s programming back on the air “while things are finalized”. Sponsers may have gone apeshit that the Oscars weren’t being shown and asked for givebacks. Also probably had something to do with the number of people that really began to run down the particulars of Fios like myself. As stated earlier, Cablevision just had that run-in with HGTV. It seems like someone has a screw loose in upper management. I’m seriously looking elsewhere for a television provider at this point. Channels cut-off and spin and finger pointing: been there too often now.

Well, I’ll be siding with Cablevision on this one. It stands out as ABC greed. Don’t watch much programming on ABC, and if it weren’t for Jeopardy, I would watch it less. ABC Evening News was enjoyable with Peter Jennings and Charles Gibson. Now it’s turned over to Diane Sawyer who looks as if she will burst into tears with the introduction of each news item.

Same here. Other than the Academy Awards last night, there are no shows on ABC that I ever watch. Turn it off and reduce my cable bill.

Cablevision offered free On Demand last night because of the inconvenience they and ABC have cause. Unfortunately, none of the movies worked!

I found out about this too late to take advantage of it. Oh well. Price I pay for getting out and enjoying the great weather yesterday. ABC has a few shows I would miss. Lost would be missed most. Modern Family is very funny.

We were able to watch one movie, but it was really glitchy and kept freezing for the first 20 minutes or so. When we tried to watch a second movie, we got an error message that directed us to call them. Definitely not the best experience.

All I’ll say is this: FiOS might cost my $10/month more than Cablevision after a few months, but I’m still glad I switched!

that position doesn’t seem to make sense… cablevision is in the wrong, seems to me. they charge us a fee for “broadcast basic;” why doesn’t part of that fee cover ABC?? as it stood before, it didn’t. they basically just pocketed the money associate with such a network.

Modern Family really is excellent. I honestly thought I wouldn’t like it, but the writing is sharp and the acting is fantastic.

I too was worried about not being able to watch Lost (and recording it simultaneously, and going back over the key scenes after it was done, and re-watching it on Sunday, and saving it on the DVR for future reference and viewing). I was already making back-up plans for this week when I first heard of this dispute about a week ago.
I was so upset that this was happening with only about 2 and a half months left in the show; couldn’t ABC pull the plug after May 23rd. I wouldn’t mind as much then. I watch Jeopardy and Modern Family (Al Bundy still rules!) on ABC, but I am nowhere near as obsessed with those shows like I am with Lost.
Obviously, ABC timed this for the Oscars and it looks like it worked. So a big thank you to all the movie fans who called and complained. Personally, I hate watching award shows of any kind. But now I can watch Lost in peace tomorrow, so thanks.

FYI, the HGTV situation is completely different than the WABC one. WABC gets free airwaves and Cablevision has to carry it as long as WABC doesn’t ask for money. The problem is Disney which owns ABC and WABC forced WABC to ask for money similar to the FOX and Time Warner cable situation a while ago. As cable networks like HGTV continue to ask more a higher fee, you will see more and more of this. And an a la carte system would mean tens of millions lost for every cable networks. You will never see that happen
Cablevision does charge for broadcast services but that includes converting a digital to monolog for those who don’t have HDTV. This is basically a fee for not having to use a converter box and antenna on the roof. The signal from the cable box is a lot more reliable than your antenna especially if you try to get some of the small local independent stations. Is it a high fee? Yes but it’s a necessary evil for a reliable connection.

Wasn’t cablevision in the same boat with HGTV etc? I think I see a pattern here.
