Hoboken Coffee Wars

3/3/2010:

Bait and Switch!

Hoboken411 reader “Coffee Addict” sent in an email yesterday, about their observations regarding the corner of 5th and Washington: “Coffee wars once again. 7-11 is now in lead with any size 69 cents beating Hoboken Daily News at 79 cents. Will HDN go less?”

What the coffee addict didn’t realize is – that the newly opened 7 Eleven isn’t engaged in a price war with the long-time king of the corner – it’s the typical “bait and switch” to get you into the store. In order to get that 69 cent price, you need to purchase a sandwich from 7-Eleven as well! Otherwise, the cost for the coffee is $1.49! Don’t be fooled by misleading advertising!

Support local small businesses in Hoboken!

How do you feel about the 7-Eleven opening up directly across the street from Hoboken Daily News? Perhaps you should stop by and make a purchase every now and then – and say hello to the owners who’ve stayed in Hoboken through thick and thin. The last thing we need is yet another empty storefront on Washington!

Is it OK that 7-Eleven opened up so close to HDN?

I hope Hoboken Daily News hangs in there, but If 7 Eleven starts to carry a more full line of magazines (inc. “adult”) Hoboken Daily News is S.O.L.

Hoboken Daily News has been a dirty dump for more than 20 years. They probably only renovated because 7 Eleven was moving in.

7-Eleven is a franchise. Usually a small business, too, just paying a franchise fee for branding, advertising and purchasing.

The small print in 7-Eleven’s sign is not that small. I would not call this one bait-and-switch.
