Teak: Open

OPENED TODAY! Read initial review below.

A bunch of us went down to see how Teak looked on it’s first day in business. And to sum it up, we were quite impressed. From the warm ever-changing lighting and unique decor, to the friendly and outgoing staff, to the delicious food, Teak looks like it’s a winner from the get-go.

We hope this wasn’t just a “best in show” opening day best-effort, and will continue to perform at this exceptional level.

We’re going to sum this up quickly and show you pictures of our experience.

The interior:
Spacious, open, roomy (all synonyms of course). Great warm decorations with randomly changing LED back-lighting. Fish tank was filled with eager and active fish. Restaurant was immaculate and well-organized. Bathrooms were clean and roomy as well.

The staff:
All were friendly, engaging and attractive. They serviced us well, and had nothing but good attitudes.

The food:
We had a pecan salad, crab cake, Chilean Sea Bass, and (I forget the name) some “Spicy Girl” sushi rolls. We will not get into details about each dish at this time, since they just opened, however, to quote the parties involved: “Better than any place in Hoboken”…. “Sushi Lounge is NO match”…. “Robongi is good, but not as good as Teak”… We were all satisfied and impressed with the initial night at Teak.

10/24/06 Update:

Some of you may be sick of hearing about this, but today is their official opening. Starting at around 4:30pm, you can come check this place out during their inaugural first day.

We should be there taking it all in, having a few drinks, snapping a few pictures and seeing what it’s all about. If you’re in the neighborhood, please stop in and report back what your opinions are!

10/17/06 Update:

Had a chance to stop by today and find out more about what’s happening at Teak.

For starters, they’re having their official Grand Opening on Tuesday, October 24th! So come by starting at Happy Hour and check the place out.

Took some more pictures today. Now while they’re putting their finishing touches on the place, awaiting furniture delivery and cleaning up, it still looks like it’ll be an amazing venue. With an anticipated capacity between 300-400, I’m sure many people will get their chance to see it in action.

They also mentioned that this is not a strictly sushi restaurant, with many other standard continental dishes to choose from. Like chicken, salads, steak and various appetizers such as calamari and mini-burgers.

Teak is trying everything in their power to keep this a classy operation. They’re considering a 25 & up age restriction and a dress code amongst other things. They’ll also choose the music carefully as not to attract the wrong kind of crowd. Also being considered are premium reserved areas with bottle services. I wish them luck and hope they succeed.

9/30/06 Update:
Just a little photo to show that the awnings and lights are going up. They’re beyond their promised opening date, but when we last checked it should be a week or two.

9/3/2006:
We had an opportunity today to get a sneak peek at what looks like it will be one of the nicest places in Hoboken to eat, hang out and have a drink!

Take a look inside:

Teak is a massive Sushi Restaurant/bar/lounge located in the old Planet Hoboken club location on Hudson St. near the train terminal.

Scheduled to open up in exactly two weeks, Teak is a very beautiful and spacious place. Wide open space, excellent appointments such as tile, slate floors, TWO floors, FOUR bars, an elevator, a giant fish tank, and many flat-screen plasma TV’s. Plus lounge/sofa seating and giant windows.

Not sure how the food will be, but I’m sure the other Sushi places in town may be a bit nervous seeing this behemoth about to open.

registered here just so i could leave a bad review for last night’s service. Came here for an afterwork function and was greeted with horrible service throughout the entire night from the manager. He literally grilled us the whole night, watching us like little children. We sat down initially and put in an order of drinks first so we could build up an appetite. 30minutes later the manager sends a different waitress to tell us that we cannot sit down unless we plan on eating. Explains that we’ll have to order at the bar. When we try to start a tab they do not allow us to and say we have to pay cash only. Manager corners one of my buddies coming out of the bathroom and tells him that if we continue to disrupt their other customers, we will have to leave. However, we were sitting in a corner table at least 50ft away from another occupied table. I do not see how we could be distupting them while the music was blasting. There were plenty of empty tables between. We stayed there just to piss him off even more because the manager was being such a jerk. We will never return to Teak again. There are plenty of other area lounges with better service.

How is this place still in business? Went there tonight for a private event where the manager tried to take advantage of us and charge us an extra $500. For what, you ask? Even HE couldn’t even tell us. Amazingly, after an hour of arguing, he was given TWO different credit cards… and neither one went through (how convenient!). We were a very large group of professionals who were clearly not looking to take advantage of the situation, yet we were repeatedly threatened to have the police called on us, even though we tried to pay! This manager was rude, unprofessional, and clearly looking to make an extra buck. Unfortunately for him, his actions cost Teak a whole slew of customers (most of whom live here in Hoboken), who were appalled by his lack of ethical standards.

I look forward to returning to this place when it’s shut down and turned into a Gap.

Don’t go here if you are offended by an automatically added 18% gratuity (for a party of 3) for piss poor slow and rude service.

I’m not drinking these days but my girlfriends ordered two rounds of wine and each took over 30 minutes. Horrible server but hey why should he care when he’s getting his tip anyway. We were too scared to order dinner as we didn’t have all night to kill.

Never again…..

Was it a Monday or Thursday? Because their entire food/drink menu is 50% off on those days.
