haha i couldn’t help but laugh… “Almost 100% of ticket price will go directly towards the rebuilding efforts in Haiti via Partners in Health and UNICEF”

lets do the math.. i pay $100, my guess the hotel and the promoters are keeping $40, lets be generous and say $20 cause you know i’m sure they’re good people. so they send $80 to unicef and friends, whose running overhead is about 40-50% annually. soo now we’re down to $40 getting to haiti at the end of this sharade.

i’ve reviewed unicef’s financials in the past and the overhead costs are right there in their annual reports for anyone to find. i dont know about the rest of you but i’m sending my $40 direct.

and before you go, does anyone know how much “aid” our government gives to large corporations in the form of tax breaks annually? a conservative estimate is around $250 billion per year, that would go a long way in haiti i imagine.

The people who run this event are about as clean as they come, reputable, honest and caring. If anything is not going to Haiti I am sure it may cover food or a “hosting fee”. The W is infamous for taking and never giving. Heck you leave a card at bar for a tab and they charge you automatic gratuity and they give you crap service. The bartenders are known to take cash tabs and run your card for them too. Many people in town have expressed misuse of their charge cards at the W. So yes indeed the W take take take anyway they can and I think this fee is deducted from you cost. Next time you stay at the W and ask the housekeeper for an extra bottle of Bliss conditioner, expect to find $2 on your bill when you check out. I’d recommend donating just about any amount you can afford to the Symposia bookstore if you’re gonna donate, locally. It’s legitimate and Symposia’s supporting missions from the Dominican Republic to Haiti, which is actually more helpful when you think about it since we’re not in the way.

For example, by operating in Haiti, you need to be taken care of with food, supplies, etc, all of which winds up depriving someone in need… But by transferring necessities to Haiti from DR, you deprive no one of nothing. A win-win.

Contact or visit Symposia for more information: symposiaproject.com/calendar_event.php?ID=359&Date=2010-02-12

Better question: how much relief has been ‘misplaced’ so far? Red Cross’ money-gone-missing number is creeping upwards again.

How much have they received in relief so far?
