Smoky Neumann Leathers Stack

10/22/2010 Update:

Neumann smoke nothing to be alarmed by

Hoboken Police and Fire were called to the Neumann Leathers building earlier today because residents were concerned about the thick smoke coming out of the stack. Officials said it was nothing to be alarmed by. Could be the cold weather and the start of the heating system.

2/2/2010:

Hoboken411 reader Wayne, who happens to have smoke-stack knowledge, wonders if the plume of black smoke is hazardous to the residents of the Mile Square…

Are they doing something wrong?

“Check this out from Neumann Leather this morning. I’ve seen it before but not like this. I first noticed it last night as I went to bed around 11pm. When I got up this am it was still going until about 8am. While it wasn’t continuous… it would smoke for a few minutes then stop then shortly start up again. Is this legal? I worked a garbage incinerator in college and the smoke had to be “scrubbed” so it came out white.”

More thick black smoke this morning. I wouldn’t think they are permitted to burn/run anything that could produce that sort of smoke. At least not now that the building is no longer functioning industry but residential/commercial space at this stage of its existence.

This was happening again this morning (October 22, 2010) at 11 am.

I live two blocks away, and I got hit with thick, toxic smoke.

They were definitely burning something they shouldn’t have been.
