Winter Breakfast Nuggets – 12/21/2009

12/21/2009:

Good morning, Hoboken – and enjoy the last six or seven hours of Autumn!

First Day of Winter Solstice

Winter Begins at 12:47pm today!

Old Man Winter may have felt he arrived late to the party when he gets here today at 12:47pm – and sees that all the snow we received during this weekend’s storm!

While today is the shortest day of the year, look at the bright side – the days will start getting longer!

Hoboken Alternate Parking Regulations Suspended December 21 2009

Parking regulations suspended today

Plus – “A State of Emergency!”

To give residents an extra day to move and clean their cars – the City has suspended alternate side parking regulations for today (at the very least – But please be careful on Snow Emergency Routes!).

Anyone remember exactly what happened in previous years? I somehow seem to recall they didn’t clean the streets until essentially ALL the snow was melted or plowed away (in this case could be many days or weeks). From what I understand, there’s a hefty cost for plowing and removing all the mounds of snow – and considering our budget crisis, it may be financially sound to wait. However, the sooner the city can turn the Cash ATM back on for parking violations, the better for them.

Oh, and the City also released a Declaration of Emergency due to the storm. Interesting note, they state that if you don’t have snow tires – they can remove your car. Is someone going around to check the brand / model of tires on all cars to pickpocket residents more? I’m assuming snow tires includes “all season” tires. But I’ve seen many more sporty vehicles with low-profile summer tires. Interesting if that’s an objective from City Hall.

Speaking of Winter…

Whether you paid attention in science class or not, you’d be surprised when you hear how many people have NO IDEA why the seasons change, or that the earth is on a 23.5 degree axis.

For those that want a quick lesson or a basic planetary refresher – enjoy this quick video primer!

Enjoy the rest of your day!

hope they don’t do street cleaner all week. how will the street cleaner even get through? What they should focus on is plowing atleast the corners, it’s horrible, they could atleast plow corners by the schools, we need better snow removal. We send so much money to the county, can’t they bring an extra plow here?

There is no way the streets can be cleaned today. Even if they made you move the cars for the plows, then the plows will push on the sidewalk or the street and then the streets are unsafe and the homeowners are at risk for ticketing for unclear walkway.

This morning around 9ish the city employees were busy cleaning up their parking lot, which is the sidewalk on Observer in front of the muni garage. Good to know they are on the job making sure their sidewalk/parking lot is clear. Also saw a city employee pick up a young lady who was having a tough time walking to wherever she was going, good to know we are providing shuttle service on city time. No need to lower the plow, raise it and just make circles around the block and do drop of service for your friends and family.

I did see a few workers out with shovels on Washington St this morning as well wearing those orange safety vests. Way to attack a problem with manual labor. Is this a green initiative or something? Shovels? How about some snow blowers?
