Winter Breakfast Nuggets – 12/21/2009
Good morning, Hoboken – and enjoy the last six or seven hours of Autumn!
Winter Begins at 12:47pm today!
Old Man Winter may have felt he arrived late to the party when he gets here today at 12:47pm – and sees that all the snow we received during this weekend’s storm!
While today is the shortest day of the year, look at the bright side – the days will start getting longer!
Parking regulations suspended today
Plus – “A State of Emergency!”
To give residents an extra day to move and clean their cars – the City has suspended alternate side parking regulations for today (at the very least – But please be careful on Snow Emergency Routes!).
Anyone remember exactly what happened in previous years? I somehow seem to recall they didn’t clean the streets until essentially ALL the snow was melted or plowed away (in this case could be many days or weeks). From what I understand, there’s a hefty cost for plowing and removing all the mounds of snow – and considering our budget crisis, it may be financially sound to wait. However, the sooner the city can turn the Cash ATM back on for parking violations, the better for them.
Oh, and the City also released a Declaration of Emergency due to the storm. Interesting note, they state that if you don’t have snow tires – they can remove your car. Is someone going around to check the brand / model of tires on all cars to pickpocket residents more? I’m assuming snow tires includes “all season” tires. But I’ve seen many more sporty vehicles with low-profile summer tires. Interesting if that’s an objective from City Hall.
Speaking of Winter…
Whether you paid attention in science class or not, you’d be surprised when you hear how many people have NO IDEA why the seasons change, or that the earth is on a 23.5 degree axis.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
