Maybe I’m not thinking clearly – but this church sign at 7th and Hudson looks a bit off to me… is that proper English?

PS – if you have images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive – send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description – if desired!!

I believe that is the king’s English, if somewhat antiquated.

Don’t know if it’s technically grammatically correct or not, but I do know that it’s the first line of a pretty common Christian Hymn (of the same title). So it makes sense in context, at the very least.

It’s not proper English. It’s awkwardly translated German.
I think you’ll find references in a Lutheran hymnal.
Or Google.

“Now thank we all our God” is a popular Christian hymn. It is a translation from the German “Nun danket alle Gott”, written circa 1636 by Martin Rinkart (1586-1649), which in turn was inspired by Sirach, chapter 50 verses 22-24, from the praises of Simon the high priest. It was translated into English in the 19th Century by Catherine Winkworth.
