Retro 11th St. not much different!

12/17/2009:

A Hoboken411 reader sent this retro image in from god knows when and said:

As much as things change…

“Take a look at this old school photo of how Hoboken used to look. Funny thing is, I belive that building at 1042 Bloomfield has been ‘for rent’ for over 100 years!”

Glad to help out!
I attended both the old and new schools.

When the old school was about to be knocked down, they had a huge sale. You could go into the old building and buy anything. Doorknobs, light fixtures, coat hooks…real cool stuff.

I remember the day they had us kids leave the old building and enter the new school. It was so exciting. The Gymatorium was HUGE. We used to have to play dodgeball in the basement. If you didn’t wear your sneakers that day, you had to pick an old used pair from a cardboard box to wear. Some of them were so gross. Kinda made you want to remember to wear your sneakers on Gym day. 😉

I think the shadow of that giant “For Rent” sign is so big no grass would grow. The upside is everyone flying by in an airplane knows the place is for rent.

The owners of 1042 Bloomfield need to do some landscaping. There used to be a nice little lawn and shrine. Now there is mulch. Some luxury.

Is the postcard a westward view? Old-timers, what is/was the church-like structure at the end?

That’s Wallace School. Now it’s the playground. The new school was built around the old school.

Love this factoid! I always sort of wondered why the playground was in a crater.
