Just like all publicly elected officials are subject to any and all scrutiny (and very well should be) – they’re also perfectly legitimate targets for parody and humor, too.
Today, Hoboken411 reader “Murph” notices some interesting similarities between our current Mayor Dawn Zimmer – and the monkey kingdom!
Who’d run city hall better? Zimmer or a chimp?
“Hey 411. I was watching TV over the weekend and saw an old commercial from CareerBuilder showing what it would be like if Monkeys ran a company. Funny how that is exactly how I feel about Dawn Zimmer and the Hoboken Council whenever I watch channel 78 on Cablevision. Since I happened to have my laptop open at the time, I decided to show your readers how eerie the resemblance is. This is the first in a 10 part series where I will compare each council member to a lesser species. Look for each of the council members in 2010!”

I’m torn. On the one hand I look forward to seeing the animal kingdom comparison to the city council members, but on the other hand my initial reaction to this photo display was that it was a cheep shot that crosses the line, going beyond legitimately holding elected officials to be accountable for lies they tell and into the realm of personal attack. I would like to think that if I could get elected to office I would not have to worry about my personal appearance becoming an issue. Also, I saw Dawn out on the street one day and she looked like an attractive lady to me.

Classic, not cruel! Being a public official, you need thick skin. Not too worried about dawn, but I bet her groupies are angry. That is even funnier than the photos!

I keep hoping that they will have her on Extreme Makeover. Granted, we all know she isn’t going to come out looking like a super model, but something a little more lady-like might do her some good. She’s the definition of an eye-sore.

All you naysayers should be reminded that an adult chimp is a killing machine – and not like a little monkey to be triffled with. Avoid tangling with one as it will bite your face off (along with some other parts) in short order.
In fact, the chimp vs pitt bull debate is a popular internet meme.
What this means for DZ’s political opponents I can’t tell you.

Well, according to the article above, which nobody seems to have read, there are another 9 similar photoshops – one for each member of the City Council – to be released in the upcoming weeks. So Beth Mason, or your “favorite politician,” will have her/his turn in the “monkey business” shortly.
Besides, how come you didn’t protest this much when H411 made fun of Roberts or Cammarano?
And while we’re at it: Dawn Zimmer owes her political career to H411 (well, to H411 and the HCDO, but that’s a separate story). If you don’t believe it, check out H411 archives from two years ago: nobody knew who she was until she appeared on H411 (I had certainly never heard of her before). But, unlike some other sites, H411 didn’t just sit there ignoring Dawn’s lack of accomplishments. And neither should you.
That said, I agree the pictures are kind of objectionable: given how many bad decisions Dawn has made in her political career, one doesn’t need these photos to make fun of her.
