Then and Now: 4th and Bloomfield

Not much has changed!
A great comparison between “then and now” in Hoboken – although thankfully, this somewhat run-down looking building (which was Jac-O-Dine well over 50 years ago) at the corner of 4th and Bloomfield is *finally* getting a new tenant after what seems like a decade!: Cartridge World (currently at 419 Washington Street).
Thanks, Jack (no relation) for the pic!

I believe that it was operated by a relative of former mayor David Roberts…his uncle?…can anyone verify?

Wasn’t that the spot of Marshall Fashions? Where for years, the letters in the window spelled MARHSALL.

One huge improvement at this corner was the straightening of the earth. It must’ve been a lot easier driving downtown than uptown in those days.

Great story. I wonder if anyone knew at the time what an icon Marlon would become and if anyone suspected the movie would turn into an American classic.

I believe the men’s store on Wash. was called Mr. Ed’s and Charlie Red worked there…Charlie is the brother of former mayor Dave Roberts and worked there prior to becoming a Hoboken firefigher and he once served as Hudson County Coordinator of Emergency Management…there is a common dot connection between Jack-o’s and Mr. Eds…..no big deal….just history.

I went to a play reading at The Hoboken Historical Museum during the summer. It was a reading of a play called Marlon Brando sat right here. I think the playwright’s name is or was Luis LaRussa. The place that you mentioned in your post. Is that the place that they were referring to in the play? The summary of the play is. Marlon Brando comes into a Hoboken establishment for a cup of coffee during the filming of On the Waterfront.
