I actually sent an angry email to HPU last week, about an unfair ticket...got a reply back from Ian himself. Didn't really offer any help, though.

Since typical parallel parking spaces are stripped for a stall length of of 23', striping would cause a loss of at least 10 spaces per block.

In response to plywood who said:

No one wants more parking spots available than I do, but lining out the streets into parking spots would IMO result in a net loss of # of spaces over the current system, due to a net gain in the space between cars. Again, charge for permits based on length of the car.

The white line rule of thumb is generally true, but one night this summer I got a ticket at 3am for parking clearly inside the white line, so I don't risk it anymore.

I miss the days of 9th and Jefferson north and west being wide open too. I've been forced up to 15th and Adams at times...

In response to ricky roma who said:

bullshit frank - total bullshit. you obviously do not have a car in town. by your argument - why are the white lines there in the first place? the white lines are not a "courtesy" - it has been the standard for enforcement for several years. park within the line - no ticket. the above truck looks over the line to me, which is why they got ticketed.

people like yourself and other posters in this thread who say - oh it's yellow - have zero clue. by eliminating the white lines you would lose literally 100's of parking spots in this town - something we cannot afford. and before you say then don't have a car - some of us actually need their car in town for work, etc. i have lived here for 10 years and with all of the new buildings in the bowels of hoboken, the usual locations for guaranteed spots (e.g. back by the shoprite) are now filled. i came home at 10pm the other night and drove around longer than i have in years looking for parking - i felt like there were literally no spots left.

Couldn't agree with you more, Frank. There have been nights where I'm so frustrated trying to find a parking spot that I have contemplated doing my own surveying of the streets, to add up the number of spots that would be open if people knew how to park correctly...

Who wants to start a committee? :)

In response to Frank G who said:

Am I missing something here regarding the pictures of the Volvo. the curb is painted yellow...so white 'dash' mark or not she shouldn't be parking there.

This may sound ridiculous but why aren't the streets lined out with parking spaces. Pre-lined streets would give you exactly X number of parking spots per block. That way you'd also eliminate the douches that 'strategically' park so as to take up 2 spaces and create a generous buffer so their cars won't get dinged by the ass who has zero parking skills or trying to SUV in a spot that could barely fit a Smartcar.

Of course doing this would make the meter maids borderline calls and we all know when it come to them and the "should I/Shouldn't I" ticket them process almost obsolete sans blatant violations where a car is clearly in the adjoining spot. But god forbid something was made easy around here

Wisen Up? First of all, I haven't criticized Ian in my responses, but criticism DOES go with any job. And it's pretty lame of you to use his salary of 10K meaning it doesn't apply. He accepted the job. Maybe we shouldn't collect ANY revenue by parking tickets considering the salary of those writing tickets.

The never ending parking debate is an exercise in futility.

The city makes big money on parking (garage fees, permit fees, tickets). Plans to "solve the problem" are only trotted out at election time, then they are stored like Christmas decorations in January.

Anyway, Sacs isn't business-as-usual. He should be a big improvement over the last guy.

Suggestion: put some gravel down under the viaduct, make some low-tech parking spots for the movie theater. Good for business (and we NEED a theater), modest cost, no loss of resident parking.
