The Board of Education now has an empty seat effective November 30th. Wonder who will fill that seat?
DeFalco quits Board of Ed
Re: Resignation from the, Hoboken Board of Education
To whom it may concern,
This letter is to inform you that, as of November 30, 2009, I will resign from my position as a Hoboken Board of Education Due Trustee. Due to increased demands from my business, I do not believe that I can dedicate the time that is needed to perform the required tasks of this position. It Is for this reason that I must step down.
Although my tenure has been short, I have found this position to be interesting & I have enjoyed working with all the members of the Board. It Is unfortunate that I must resign, however, the needs of.
my clients and my livelihood, must take precedence over this volunteer position.
In closing, I would like to thank those that have assisted me in this position. I wish the Board of Education, the Superintendent, and all the faculty of the District good luck on continuing to do what is
necessary for the betterment of our children.
Philip A. De Falco, CPA

What a polite way of saying the whole board of ed is a disaster and I don’t want to be a part of it.

You’re out of your mind.
The audit presented the other night was a SCATHING indictment of the Raslowsky-Bubbles Era. In the words of a friend who attended the meeting:
“Audit was presented–horrible. laundry list of issues. Stipends paid for people who weren’t working, kids funds (PTA etc..) being raided by Principals to pay teachers for missing items. Tuition billing issues, supervisors paid when not serving as such, admin positions paid with instructional funds to avoid adding an additional above 10% to the already 70% above the state avg for admin/pupil expenditures.”
In other words, for the FIRST TIME in years, a Superintendent READ the TEST SCORES to the community, and the MISERABLE goings-on were presented to the community, and now we KNOW the magnitude of the problem.
That’s WHY DeFalco resigned. If he wanted to roll up his sleeves and work to fix the broken system he would have STAYED. But no, a little sunlight and the rats run away. It’s a new day, it’s a new board and THAT’S why DeFalco ran away.
Yes, Camel2: SUNLIGHT IS THE BEST DISINFECTANT. The Kids First majority and the Interim Super are doing everything to EDUCATE the public about the state of our schools and the corruption within, that DeFalco tolerated. The Kids First majority will REVERSE these dishonest practices, and THAT’S why Phil doesn’t want to stick around.

Curious, the man resigns right after the audit test scores gets discussed? Maybe now even he can see he is more of a hinderance than help so he is doing the “right” thing.
I wouldn’t say the BOARD is the disaster, it is the schools system itself that is a disaster. I am still hopeful the new board can help fix things. But that will require busting a few heads.

The board of Ed was a joke -Now you see a real BOE
Last Boe meeting had BOE auditor report on a fraction of the financial shenanigans
Board is actually now working investigating and will be going after money illegally given out .
I received this email from someone who went to meeting
First good school board meeting that I went to in Hoboken where I felt it was run the way a public meeting should be run.
Acting Superintendent Carter thanked the parents /audience for their questions rather than being berated.
this was just the beginning surface audit – uncovered numerous problems
Acting Superintendant said he never worked at a school that received such a bad report
School & board needs to go in and investigate each area more
A number of people receiving stipends when they no longer work at school.
School food service that was outsourced is losing $600,000 approx
Some because of not collecting money from parents.
Rest because company was supposed to hire Hoboken food service people and pay salaries and pensions-they have not and we are still paying for this
Over 10 people (principals etc) were filed under instructional cost (teachers) when they should be administrative.
Hoboken already has the highest administrative costs in state as well as too many administrators
Student bank accounts -(students raise money for different trips events etc)
money was used by employees to purchase personal items such as i pods

Am I the only one that thinks its crude, to basically say, I ran, I won and since I don’t get paid for it, IM OUT?

Well if those allegations are true, then I would think that would give the BOE reason to at least fire a few people FOR CAUSE.

Hoboken411, nice edits on the resignation letter!
Although it was addressed to Superintendent Carter, President Markle and Secretary Anthony, for some reason Mr. DeFalco started this letter saying:
“To Whom it May Concern”.
A little odd to do that when it is addressed to three people by name, but ok, let’s go with that.
But Mr. DeFalco didn’t even write “To Whom it May Concern”. He wrote “To Whom it May Concerns”
It was nice of Hoboken411 to fix the typo in Mr. DeFalco’s resignation letter, but I think it’s a good message to all our kids in the schools that you should proofread your business letters, especially important ones that will be read by a lot of people!
Maybe it’s better that Mr. DeFalco focus on his accounting business.

The fact that he was not a regular at school board meetings before running, like Sulivan has been was enough to not get my vote.
The worm has turned. Raia gone, now DeFalco.
“To whom do lions cast their gentle looks?
Not to the beast that would usurp their den.
The smallest worm will turn being trodden on,
And doves will peck in safeguard of their brood.”

It has a lot more to do with the audit findings than not having time as a volunteer. This debacle was going on during his watch. He was on the Finance Committee and ran his campaign based on his professional ability. Oops.

Wouldn’t you also think, logically, that the guy was a friend of Pupie’s and part of that gang…now you have a pro-Zimmer council, along with Zimmer in office…he probably was on the BoE hedging his bets for a better position if Cammarano hadn’t imploded….stuck around until the election, saw that he has no friends in City Hall and jets…typical Hoboken mentality…

This is great news! Long overdue – really – did he ever have original ideas or thoughts or was he just a mouthpiece/puppet? As a parent of children in the Hoboken Public Schools, it is so refreshing to see a Bd of Ed and Superintendent who REALLY DO care about doing what is best for the students and the schools – not inflating their egos or furthering their personal agendas. Keep up the good work!!

I thank Phil for doing the right thing and resigning.
He was basically dead weight from day 1. He never seemed to be at any meetings, and didn’t add much value at all. I don’t think he is a bad guy, and he hadn’t been on the Board long enough to really be accountable for the previous failings, but the BoE just didn’t seem to interest him. I’m glad he’s getting out, and hopefully his seat will be occupied by someone who truly cares about what is going on in the system.

You people are unbelievable. Delusional. A lot of this stuff happened on Kids First’s watch. They never go by the schools. I have not seen one of these chicks in a school unless its for a meeting or Maureen’s self appointed PTO president meetings. Jesus. Yeah..they are all the answer.
Carter and Rusack are the anser too right? Carter has so many lawsuits against him from Plainfield, its absurd.

Oh Please. Give it up. Everyone of your accusations are false. Not one bit of truth to any of it. With all due respect, if you want to keep any credibility you need to make sure your facts are remotely correct.

Kf voted no on the contracts and budget. They did try to bring it to the attention of the public. Please note, the Auditor asks the Board President how he/she should present the information. Last year, (rhodes Kearns pres.) the auditor indicated that while there were some findings, the boe should be proud and feel confident that the admin were open and he had the utmost confident in the admin to correct any issues that the district may have. KF members continued to press the issues asking when these items would be corrected as many were going on for years. The Auditor responded that the admin assured him that it would be corrected. This rally went back and forth, for a while. Repeat violations were continually brought up, even as high as the comm. office–nothing was done. This is the reason you need an experienced and qualified Super. with an honest board. The violations go back as far as one can find.
You can search: njdoe kpmg audit 2006- to get an idea of DETAILED finding with appendix. AMAZING corruption. The BOE approved payment for Traffic violations, dinners at places like Amanda’s, Frankie and Jonnie’s etc..in excess of 50k. Truly amazing. The NJDOE is a broken oversite dept. which has little if any power or desire to hold anyone accountable. They have little, if any, control nor concern for violations of mandates and/or accounting principles. Nothing is done when violations occur. The only response one may get is..”vote in responsible people.”
Just this year, the budget was submitted, ammended and approved by the county supt.jack was told he could not have the extra supervisors in the district so he transferred them into instructional services line. The county supt. approved this. I found it back then, (preapproval)-if i could find it, he could find it. Especially, when he told them to cut supervisory positions.
What will happen now that all has been discovered-nothing as usual- this stuff has been noted for years. It is what it is. Unless the concerned citizens get out there and hold people accountable, we are going to have these issues. Like the Commisioner’s dept. said, “Elect responsible people.”

clarification: nothing by the DOE will happen. Now that KF is in, The specific audit violations have been brought to everyone’s attention and for the first time. Furthermore, a date for a Corrective Action Plan has been noted and a presentation will occur in the Dec. meeting. This is amazing! I have never heard the Corrective Action plan nor the test scores presented before. Kudos KF! Keep up the good work!
