you have a good point, and i'm not trying to blame zimmer for everything rather i'm just commenting on her complete inneptitude in every job function that i've witnessed her as mayor.

regarding the pier, everyone in their right mind knows wooden pilings don't last long mollusks or not! sinatra park is built on cement pilings, as is our new waterfront pet project i like to call "the park to nowhere"

whether its roberts, zimmer, or the next crony as far as i'm concerned there's really not much difference except the nameplate on the desk. in my opinion our local gov't needs radical overhaul and until it happens we can expect a continuing decline in our standard of living... which will surely be blamed on "economic conditions" by our elected representitives when in fact the predominant reason is decades of electoral abuse and mismanagement.

In response to Hobokent who said:

To be fair, I'd be writing the same thing if Russo or Roberts were still Mayor.

People, you can't blame this administration with previous administration's short-cuts. You might as well blame Obama for the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis. Yet, ironically Obama and Zimmer are here in 2009 cleaning-up previous administrative problems.

Something tells me that in Zimmer's wildest dream, she never sat down at age 15 and thought, "Hmmm . . . Now that GE is no longer dumping toxic sludge into the Hudson River, all kinds of 'life' will return to their natural habitat, including those pesky mollusks that will eat their way thru the old wooden pier pilings in Hoboken, NJ."

Fast forward a bunch of years, and here we are in Hoboken where all of Russo's and Robert's selling off of the city's assets rather than raising the taxes (which they should have done!) has put the city in a financial clusterf*@k and guess what, the mollusks are back and they are eating up the wooden pilings that seemed just 10 or 20 years ago to be relatively invincible.

So for those of you who are NOT familiar with the problems faced along our waterfront, this is not going to be a "dump 1000 cubic feet of dirt and fix-it" issue, this is going to be a huge costly project they may take years.

Want to blame someone? Blame the environmental activists who made GE stop their dumping of toxic sludge into the Hudson River allowing it to come back to life, not the Mayor who inherited the problem.

All local government is a joke. There is no reason for all this local govt. Should be on a county level. So much overlap in positions.

These small muni govts allow for the corruption because more than half the voters work for the corrupt govt and keep them in power. Makes it hard as hell to correct the problem

In response to jazzeru who said:

honestly our local government is a joke and it starts with the mayor. as a new resident (2 years) of hoboken i decided to educate myself for this election by watching council meetings and the mayoral forums. i was stunned by the inneptitude of most of our elected officials along with the blatant lies and deceptions regarding our budget. this all starts with the mayor who wouldn't even acknowledge or comment on the issues around the budget neverthless produce one for examination. she is a babbling two face ponzy dodging the important questions and issues like a skilled football player. i would venture to bet a significant portion of her constituency has not even seen her in action at one of these meetings but this is just my opinion in a town where roughly only 25% of the population actually vote.

there is absolutely no excuse for any of this and they will continue to get away with it until we stand up and say enough is enough. unfortunately in this country we like to scream and moan about these issues but rarely do we get off our arse and do something about it. so we are left with rotting piers, closed parks, and a bloated local gov't rife with corruption and wasted spending.

i hate to say this but the piers are probably just the beginning. the budget (if and when we get one) will likely set a harsh new reality for the future of our town thanks in large part to decades of wasteful local gov't whose only goal has been to enrich themselves and their cronies on the back of the taxpayers.

In response to KenOn10 who said:

IIRC, Sinatra Park and the gazebo below Stevens was constructed by city personnel, evidently using a whole bunch of paper mache. What's next? Um, anything else the city built on the cheap?

To be fair, the waterfront situation would be a nightmare for ANY newly elected mayor of Hoboken. Sadly, it probably isn't the most important thing on Zimmer's desk. The best thing she could do is publicly delegate the task of organizing the repairs and publicly set a due date for a schedule. And also rope Stevens into supplying engineers to review the plan.

How about it Ms. Mayor?

Having watched the city council meeting it appears that council president plans on borrowing funds for a number of capital items. I suspect the piers will be on the list. The real isuue was i believe he stated that the city borrowing power was only at some 28%. While there are a number of items that need fixing and new borrowing for 1600 park park, we need to be careful. But, without a budget you can not do anything.
