August 2006 – See July wing review below this

After the atomic wings last month almost melted my skull, it was time to come back and watch the Met game and try some other basic grub on their menu.

This time we chose the buffalo bites, which we know are fantastic (no atomic sauce this time). They’re crispy, tender and lean. Very addictive appetizer indeed. Possibly Black Bear’s best item on the menu.

My friend chose the plain cheeseburger. A good portion size, but nothing to write home about. But fresh bun and toppings. The fries were ok. Tasted like fresh cut potatoes actually. Not sure if they make them themselves or not.

I decided to be different and ordered the chicken cheese steak, thinking the chicken would be chopped and finely diced like you’d get with a traditional cheese steak. Boy was I mistaken. What a sloppy nightmare this was. They basically chopped a whole chicken breast into just a few thick pieces then proceeded to play lacrosse with the ingredients and the roll. Completely unmanageable. While the chicken was prepared adequately, the whole eating process was a chore. Although I devoured it all eventually, I was just left an-gry. Not gonna order this again.

Black Bear is still a reliable place for some gut-filling bar grub, they have Blue Moon beer, and a wall of TV’s to watch your favorite team. Haven’t tried many of their other items (although the bar pizza looked rather inviting). We’ll be back again to test some other stuff.

Have any of you tried their other menu selections? If so, please advise what might be recommended. Thanks!

July 2006 – Wing Review

Black Bear was chosen today for a couple reasons. The Mets and Yankees were both on (getting their asses kicked) and they have lots of TV’s to view, and we needed to review their wings (we’re falling behind schedule here).

First of all, it was a Sunday, and things were looking good because Blue Moon Belgian beer was on special. So that helped.

Got a nice seat at the bar perfectly in front of many TV’s. The festival was still going, so Washington Street wasn’t as busy as it might have been.

Wings it was. Atomic heat.

When the wings arrived, they looked pretty standard. I noticed the menu said “crispy buffalo wings”, so I was hoping they delivered.

And they did, sort of. For starters, the wings tasted just fine. Very hot. Sweaty hot (when you got to the few wings that were drenched in the hottest sauce). So that was great. Secondly, the meat fell off the bones, which is a very important key for good wings. Lastly though, the wings were paltry and almost shriveled to the bone. Like all skin? Not all, but many of them were weak. So that kind of lowers their rating. Good, but not great. Tasty, but not all that filling.

I wish someone could hit the bill on all the necessary characteristics!

Overall, they’re just fine. But if you want to get something better, try the buffalo bites. Those are terrific and will be ordered regularly whenever we eat at the Black Bear. I’ll save the wings for some other place.
