Parking is costlier than you think in Hoboken
Here’s a nutty incident that slipped by me – and must have happened in the wee hours this morning. Hoboken411 reader Chris tipped me off about this scene of destruction he spotted today:
“Thought you should know there are 4 cars in a row between Eighth and Seventh Streets on the West side of Hudson Street completely wrecked. Looks like either a drunk driver or a disgruntled street cleaner drove into them. As yesterday was street cleaning, it is a safe assumption that this happened last night.”
I swung by this afternoon and one of the cars was apparently removed – but three of the four were still there. I’m not even sure HPD was notified (I assumed they were – and would have likely got in touch with the car owners). Just a crappy way to see your car if you’re expecting to go somewhere, right?

maybe we shouldnt always jump to the worst conclusion that because its Hoboken it had to be a drunk driver. Could have just been a bad driver.

I highly doubt it was just a bad driver. No sober person could be that bad. The way the cars were hit and the damage, it had to be someone not in their right mind, maybe drunk or drugged. A “bad” driver, can sideswipe a car, maybe dent one, but other factors were involved with this type of damaage…

This has happened to me 3 times this year, while my car was parked.
The first was a drunk girl who slammed into 4 cars a took off. She couldn’t even walk when they caught her.
The second time some guy hit my car and took off. A witness left a note on my car with his plates and description and their phone number. I brought it to the police and they said there was nothing they could do. It took two weeks of me going in a badgering them, to convince them to just call the guy and ask if he did it. They kept saying they had no proof and he would just say he wasn’t involved, but he copped up to it, so to speak.
The third time was a city can, they left a note. Its been hell trying to get them to cut me a check.
Here are your take aways: Street parking in this town is a huge bitch. The Hoboken Police department is, at least in my 2 or 3 experiences with them, completly worthless. They are just utterly incompetent and arogant.

Could they have just been tired? Could they have swirved to avoid a squirrel. I am sure there are plenty of factors one can think of.

Are you kidding? Swerving to avoid squirrels? Squirrels are quick. Plus if they swerved to avoid something, they would have hit one car. This is horrible that some idiot, caused so much destruction to other people’s property. Just wrong. If they’re tired, they shouldn’t be driving. If they are afraid of squirrels in the road, then they shouldn’t drive.

The punishment for drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident is less than drinking an open beer on the sidewalk in Hoboken.

Seen this before right around this block. Also have seen the drunk try to drive away after his wheel fell off his car after he smashed into the other cars. Cops got that guy, which seems rare.
My favorite in this area are the Stevens fratboys who vandalize cars. Maybe their mommies don’t give them enough allowance, so they are rioting.
