Reader Mail: Trashier Hoboken?

11/6/2009:
Hoboken411 reader Erin was wondering if you notice anything different about Hoboken lately…
How’s the trash pickup in your ‘hood?
“Is it just me, or has anyone else noted a vast increase in the amount of trash lining Hoboken’s streets over the past few months, and/or the now-sporadic recycling pick ups? We’re lucky if our recyclables are picked up every other week. Curious.”

It’s funny that this is an article pointing out the increased trash on the street, and 3 articles down there is another story saying we can save money by cutting street cleaning.

True, but one is trash where it’s supposed to be.

I have seen the little truck going aroung picking up trash daily on Washington Street where the trash is mostly put in the cans. Maybe we just need more cans. Personnally, I think I have more of an isuue on the street cleaning and will comment there.

Is this trash piling up because people are using public cans for their personal garbage? That’s sure what it looks like here. Even at my building lately the 8 cans we share are filling more rapidly in the past few months and I find it really odd-I don’t think it’s all our own stuff.
In general, there is trash everywhere on my block but then again I can see how people take a route walking south and don’t hit a garbage can for many, many blocks and eventually just jettison whatever item in disgust. This tends to happen on the weekend with to-go containers in the wee hours of the morning in my neighborhood. There really should be more cans!

I completely agree about the lack of trash cans. If it isn’t within sight, no one will carry trash around for 6 blocks hoping they may stumble upon a can and it just gets worse off Washington. For the time it takes people to sweep up blocks of trash with their little brooms, they could empty a few more trashcans.
General disrespect is a big problem too. People have been working with the Principal and while they say that they’ll start encouraging people to use one of the many trash cans in Columbus park, nothing has changed. Sometimes when I mention something kids say “then you pick up my f’g trash” “then call the f’g cops, I know them” “like I f’g care about that” and a myriad of other charming responses. It’s not just kids by any means, but that’s mostly where I run into and have tried to stop the problem.

I have definitely noticed the sporadic pickups, particularly with recycling. It seems to have gotten worse this year. Probably 10-20% of the time our stuff doesn’t get picked up even when clearly they “decided” to pick up other bags on the same block. What is the problem?

Could it be that this is a “silent protest” of our city workers against the new mayor?
Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but back in June when I suggested that Zimmer, with her recklessness, will cause the services to diminish in this town, many guys scorched me for it. Then again, what if this garbage pickup is slacking deliberately?

garbage goes out on monday, wednesday, friday and sunday NIGHTS after 9pm in front of your own house…
recycling “bottles-cans-matal” go out tuesday NIGHTS after 9pm
recycling “cardboard & paper” go out thursday NIGHTS after 9pm
The trash cans on the corners are for litter ! There should not be any bags of garbage by those “litter baskets” if every one follows the schedule the right way, there should not be anything on the street..There should not be anything left on corners or somebody elses property

Of course that’s what you believe

I believe it was a coincidence: perhaps this week there was more garbage than usual, made it look worse, will correct itself shortly.
Then again, there are suspiciously many coincidences in this town.

Seems more than likely what is being pictured here is residential garbage in and around a municipal “handheld garbage” can, a problem as old as the “handheld garbage” cans. Only takes a few indifferent, self-involved people who can’t be bothered walking a few extra steps to the garbage area in their building to torque out the system. This is a case for common sense, not more pick-ups. Maybe they should break open the bags, figure out whose kitchen this came from, and fine appropriately.

PS: Is it possible that Washington St is finally ready for dedicated can and bottle recycling cans? Clearly we weren’t ready when they tried it about 7 years ago. However, even places like Point Pleasant, which are largely tourist areas, are giving it a shot now.

More than half the people who put out recycling trash should be happy it is picked up at all, since they don’t follow the guidelines. If you take a look, there is every kind of trash in the recycling bags, and the bags you use should be clear or able to be recycled with the stuff you put out. That’s paper on Thursday and #1 or #2 on the plastic on Tuesdays. (FWIW Whole Foods in Edgewater will recycle the #5 plastic if you bring it to the customer service counter.)
The Tuesday night pickup now comes by us around 11pm whereas all 6 nights used to be only after midnight.

Oh, also, maybe there is less trash pickup during the day because the barrel guys are busy this time of year picking up the fallen leaves.

We need more trash cans. We also need more people to pick up a piece of litter at least once every day.

I thought that it was illegal to put household trash in these street cans. At least that was what Carmine (RIP) used to tell people at Columbus Park.

When Hoboken was overgrown with weeds and overflowing w trash two summers ago, I sought out some information on this from the city including the department of health. I also spoke w the business owner that were in close proximity to the piles of trash on Washington. The story from the businesses is that it has always been this way. In my neighborhood the City provided a solution by removing the public can:). The city and public building owners did comply w cutting the grass but only after being put on notice. Ahh but don’t you find the trash when it blows in the wind part of the charm of Hoboken?

That’s the spirit! At least 3/4 of the problem is apathy.

People in Hoboken are pigs. I can’t even count how many times a day I see people throw their trash on the sidewalk or toss a cigarette butt wherever the hell they feel like it (that goes double for the nail salon, haircut joint and Korean grocery store employees, who always seem to be outside smoking and then just flick their butt to the ground when done). How hard is it to hold on to your garbage until there is a proper place to dispose of it or use an ashtray?

Report this to those in charge because it may just be a problem of proper supervision.
