Urban Chicken – Doomed?
Man – I walk six miles a day – and I miss stuff? What the hell is wrong with me?
Urban Chicken Not Open…
A few weeks back – I received a few emails about Urban Chicken being closed… I went and investigated, and it appeared just to be some internal repairs that were needed – and only temporary.
However, I get a bunch more emails recently citing the same situation (and I assumed they were still having issues) – but checked it out yesterday evening – and it appears the place is scrapped and doomed! I asked a neighbor what the deal was and she said “They went out of business two weeks ago!”
What the hell happened? Did Cluck-U Chicken send a giant deliver of “F-U” to the previous reigning champ of Hoboken Chicken? What gives? Is Hoboken a “One Chicken Town?”
See other (now meaningless) updates after the jump…
Was called “Chicken & Rib Crib”, now called Urban Chicken. I wonder if directory assistance operators will confuse “Urban Chicken” with the Hoboken “Urban Kitchen“…
Read back about 8 months ago when these renovations began and see contact info below.
They shut down a few days ago for renovations. Aaraa, Rib Crib along with the rest of the building are being renovated.
The owner of Rib Crib plans to spruce up the place a bit. Remodeled and updated interior, revised / improved menu, and some outdoor seating with an ice-cooler so you can BYOB and eat some hot wings outside on the nice days of spring, summer and fall.
He’s unsure whether they’ll re-open in December, as Aaraa is promising. It’d be nice if they did, or some time around then. Last year, Rib Crib sold 20,000 chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday. That’s like a bar not being able to open on St. Patty’s day.

Seeing we’re on this all out blitz to sample various chicken wings, today seemed to be a great fit for a lunch snack at what seems to be the most popular place for wings in Hoboken.
I didn’t order delivery, so no word on how long it would have taken. However, judging from the three people just lounging around in the store, and no phones ringing, I’d reckon it would have been less than 1/2 hour.
Take a look at this simple blue box to keep the items organized.
I placed a simple order. 10 Hot Wing “dinner” (even though it was lunch). Cost: $10.05. Comes with fries and a bun. I really cannot understand why this bun is included. Maybe with chicken fingers, so you can have a little whimsical fun making a mini sandwich, but unnecessary with this particular concoction.
The wings themselves were pretty good. I wouldn’t say great. The flavor of the sauce was very good, and they were crispy and meaty. However, there’s a lot of skin on these puppies, and I found the meat rather difficult to pull from the bone. Not a good sign (I have all my teeth). A paltry 2oz. of bleu cheese per 10 wings also not enough. No celery or carrots, either. French fries on the other hand, were excellent! I’ve had them before soggy, and they kinda sucked. Request crispy. Same with the wings if you want the meat to pull off bone properly.
I guess for “takeout wings” nothing else in Hoboken compares (such as Domino’s or Wings to Go, or the midget (pigeon) wings you get at chinese places), but I wouldn’t rank these as the “best” wings in town overall. Found them to be a bit over priced (on a cost per wing basis), a bit tough to manage. What can you say? I do like their regular crispy fried chicken though. Excellent!
Maybe being in a bar makes certain wings taste better, who knows. We’ll see. Many more wing evaluations (and Mylanta) to come!
After this week, wings will be banned until Thanksgiving. I swear! (perhaps reviews of health food stores or fitness centers are in order?)
