Is your Cablevision still slow?

1/4/2010 Update:
Hoboken411 reader John shares his recent experience with a Cablevision Technician, and wonders…
What excuses did Cablevision give you?
“I was wondering if you could post a followup to the slow Cablevision internet story. We had a tech come out again yesterday and he told us that “because Telemundo has put up a new tower near the river it is messing up the modems and causing service issues.”
I just wanted to see if other people got the same excuse we did. The tech also told me they are trying to find a way to adjust the frequencies of the modems so they are no longer susceptible to interference. We are over on Sixth and Jefferson, and the tech said we were the fourth call on that block alone.”
Did you receive that excuse, or something completely different? Has service improved over the past few weeks?
12/16/2009 Update:
Hoboken411 reader Larry sent in a suggestion for getting your (Hoboken’s) Cablevision internet up to speed…
You gotta complain, or they won’t do a thing!
“If you use Optimum Online for Internet connection, there is a severe problem in Hoboken of too many people using the cable connection at the same time (especially in the evenings) and it seriously affects download (and sometimes upload) speed.
You can check your speed by clicking here and clicking “Begin Test”. Download speed should be about 12.00 and upload about 2.00. Anyway, according to the technicians, the more people that complain, the faster the problem will be corrected. Call Cablevision today at: 201-798-6060!

11/5/2009:
Hoboken411 reader John is wondering if anyone else is experiencing problems with their internet connections… (I have FiOS and it’s smooth sailing…)
Is it just me?
“Have you heard if anyone had REALLY slow internet with Cablevision lately? For about the last week/ week and a half we’ve been getting only about 1 to 2 mbps from the modem. Cablevision has come out (and of course it worked perfectly in front of the tech) and blamed it on loose wiring — which the tech did tighten while he was here both in the apt and at the junction box.
We’re still having the issues. We’re over on Jefferson street — heard of any internet issues in the area?”

I’m not far from you and I see between 24 mbps and 36 mbps on a regular basis.

We’re having horrible issues with Cablevision, too. Mostly with the internet, especially with streaming TV shows on the internet. How has FIOS been for you? Especially in regard to internet/streaming? (we’re at 3rd and willow)
In response to jmikola who said:
Apart from the poor speeds, my first complaint about Cablevision resulted from the disconnect process, which is still ongoing.
I took a vacation day last week and waited the afternoon for an appointment that never showed up and never even called my cell phone. During a coffee walk, I noticed one of their techs parked a few blocks from my apartment – curious if that’s the guy that should have showed up. Calling CV after 5pm for an explanation told me that the tech reported “no access” to my street-level, unlocked meter room. They then promised a return call from the truck dispatcher between 5-8pm (twice) to follow-up, and again I received no calls.
Annoyingly, their automated system rescheduled an 11am appointment on the subsequent Tuesday without any confirmation on my part. That was another series of calls to move that to a Saturday, since I have no desire to gamble another vacation day.
I imagine poor disconnect treatment is commonplace with any provider, but if the company is going to have a CSR read a pre-written script about valuing my future business as a return customer and expect me to take that seriously, they should really communicate that sentiment throughout the rest of their company.

How is FIOS working out? Is there internet speed faster than Cablevision? Are you able to stream TV shows from the internet without problems? I’m having terrible problems with cablevision.
In response to chrisjur who said:
I’ve had enough with Cablevision as well and have a FiOS installation scheduled for tomorrow.
I’m on 1st and Madison and the Internet has slowed to a crawl at times of the day over the last year. Channel changing on the TVs is a painful process. Sometimes the guide and menus systems are not usable.
I run a fairly good sized technology company and am an engineering adjunct at Rutgers, so I’m a fairly technical guy. I have tried everything I can using multiple computers, routers, signal testers, etc. to get to the bottom of the problem over the past year. The bottom line is that there’s too many users and too narrow of a pipe, period. It’s not my computer (or the 5 computers in my house), as they’ve suggested. It’s not my WiFi, which they also have blamed. It’s just slow.

Is this still working well for you? We mostly have problems streaming TV shows from the internet. Do you know if the amplifier will rectify that type of problem?
In response to YipYap who said:
The cable guys around here are notorious for splitting up the wire too many times. Walk around town and look at the sloppy wiring and splitters on the poles and wires.
Cablevision puts out a pretty weak signal as it stands to discourage theft, so the more the wire is split the more issues you will have in your building. The building I live in has one wire coming from the street and was split up a few times between all of the apartments.
The Cable guy came and measured the signal then he went around and disconnected the six other wall outlets I have in my place. That fixed it but would only allow one TV to work properly, with the phone and the internet service. He was too damm lazy to do it right and run a new line from the street even though I was paying for two HD DVR boxes, the phone and internet service.
Anyway the lazy bastard left after messing up my wiring, saying there was nothing he could do.
I had enough of cablevision and their lazy techs so I took matters into my own hands and fixed it myself. I purchased a bi-directional cable amplifier at Radio Shack, reconnected my wall jacks to the amplifier and poof no more signal problems. The amplifier requires power has one input and four outputs.
Check it here at Radio Shack.
Anyone need a Christmas gift idea for a friend with choppy cablevision or weak internet signal?
Well here you go.
