Free Pass?
One Hoboken411 reader tipped me off about this “Official” vehicle with United States Department of State plates on it – illegally parked close to an intersection and said “Why doesn’t the HPD ticket this car? I saw at least three drive by!”

Parking is tight in this town. I do have the opinion that there are “SOME” intersections were you could park in the yellow zone and not cause a safety hazard for pedestrians or make it difficult for larger vehicles (fire trucks) to turn. Maybe some police or fire personnel would disagree with that and so it’s across the board that we have these large yellow zones everywhere.

SM, I’m inclined to disagree about there being any intersections that are safe to park in. Do you have an example?

I’m pretty sure those are diplomat plates. They are exempt.

They diplomat is exempt, the vehicle is not a diplomat. The car can be ticketed and even towed. NYC has been fighting with the diplomats for years over unpaid fines. When Bloomberg took office back in 2002 he vowed to tow away illegally parked consular vehicles, since they were such a nuisance and public safety issue in NYC. Colin Powell, then secretary of state, had to step in to broker a compromise. NYC still regularly tickets and sometimes tows the vehicles if they are blocking intersections and fire hydrants.

You think American diplomats pay parking tickets in other countries? Doubtful. It’s a perk that comes with the job, I don’t think its a big deal.

You really think the State Dept is going to pay a local parking ticket to Hoboken? Ha.

England is upset because American diplomats don’t pay the London congestion pricing fees, too.
