(No, not a Halloween parody…)

Zimmer cuts ribbon while HUMC burns through cash

For three years, Hoboken411 readers lambasted former Hoboken Mayor David Roberts for cutting ribbon after ribbon – while Hoboken got deeper and deeper into scandal and debt. Roberts was mocked for running around town with scissors and having city employees put up his ribbon cutting pictures on the city website. Guess what’s changed under Acting Mayor Dawn Zimmer?

Nothing.

As Acting Mayor, Zimmer is also automatically a member of the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority Board. When news broke about the audit that showed a surprise $22 million dollar loss at Hoboken University Medical Center, did Zimmer attend the HMHA board meeting this week to grill hospital officials about what was going on? Was she there to hear the hospital CFO was “relieved of his duties?” No, but she did find time Thursday afternoon to cut a ribbon for HUMC’s expanded Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Roberts also cut ribbons while avoiding meetings

Dave Roberts also ducked HMHA meetings as Mayor but never missed a ribbon cutting at the Hospital. Still, even Roberts didn’t appoint a former Hospital CEO who resigned in a sea of red ink to the HMHA board. Zimmer’s secret midnight appointment of Jonathan Metsch has a lot of tongues wagging. Funny how Metsch also just happens to appear in Zimmer’s last mailer endorsing her.

Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine gets upgraded

Best of luck to the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine on their new 4D ultrasound machines, which provide much clearer pictures than traditional ultrasounds. With so many mothers and mothers-to-be in this town it only makes sense for HUMC to step up its game in the maternity department. Not all the news is bad, and there are many good Doctors, Nurses and employees working hard to serve the community at HUMC. Whether the very highly paid upper management has what it takes to make the hospital break even is another story.
