Reader Mail: Filing a complaint?

10/22/2009:
A Hoboken411 reader who requested anonymity wonders what you’d do about a Hoboken Police car and a crosswalk incident. Would you let it go?
HPD nearly runs us over!
“My wife was walking with our one year old (in a stroller) this morning at 8:30AM. She was in the crosswalk and there was a police car approaching. There was more than enough time for him to stop, but he nearly ran them both over. He did not have his lights on. I’m sure people will complain that she did something wrong, but I believe she had the right of way.
My question is this: Do I make a complaint to the police department? (She got his license plate number.) I feel that if I give my name and address, I may be subject to some type of police harassment in the future. What would you suggest? Just let it go or report it?”

No one wants to take pictures with the Hoboken PD because tourists don’t tend to travel from all over the world to visit Hoboken, NJ. (THANK. GOD. Walking around the strollers and the elderly and dodging bicycles on the sidewalk is enough, we don’t need any tourists.)
As far as abuse of power goes, I’m sure there are a few people in the Hoboken Police Dept. who would abuse their power to some extent, as there are apparently some criminals in there as well. Still, this doesn’t mean all Hoboken Police Officers are bad people. And as with the article, I think the story about the cab driver, friend, and cops is missing some information. For example, I suspect the said friend was drunk and being disrespectful himself. Also, why would you get in a verbal dispute with a cab driver? I’m curious what this was about.

Did you ever think that maybe it’s because people like you think who the hell they are? That people like you complain about the petty nonsense. People like you think they know it all, the law included.
Maybe that’s why there is some friction between the community and the PD. Instead of bashing them here on this forum, why not go there and meet them and or stop them on the street and greet them. Have a conversation with them and ask them how they are doing. Are there some bad apples? sure, what place of work doesn’t have them?, yours included. Instead you have one unpleasant incident and throw it all out here for all to see and most likely without full details because of course, god forbid you look bad.

Matt, there are actually plenty of tourists in this town these days (W Hotel, Carlo’s Bakery, Food Tour). I don’t need to give any more detail about my situation, you obviously don’t want to accept my issue.
Antinucci, I don’t think I know the law better than Police, but I do know that when I respectfully ask the Police officer for his name and badge he should not feel threatened and tell me he’s going to lock me up. Don’t you agree??? I know you don’t want to believe this happened and I don’t want to argue with you but it really did. I come from a family of Police officers and I know there are good and bad in all of us in society I’m just frustrated with the way, unlike you, most people in this town very openly share stories about how Police abuse their powers. There has to be something wrong. Maybe it’s the Police who should try to reach out to the community. I do think the town hall meetings with the Police Chief Falco are a step in the right direction. By the way, you never did answer my question:
Why are you so determined to dismiss any claim that Hoboken cops abuse their power? Do you have a family member in the HPD? Or is it because they are just always going out of there way too help people?

Did your situation happen? Maybe, I don’t know. I was not there nor have I ever had any bad experience with the PD. I’m sure others have had some sort of incident with them, we all do at some point in any type of industry. Who hasn’t argued with a contractor? who has arguede with a store clerk? Who hasnt argued with a salesman? We all have at some point in our lives disputed something with someone in some other industry because we were unhappy with the type of service we were getting at the time. Alot of stories are probably embellished or retaliatory in nature just as some might be true, but it s my opinion that alot of the reason why people post here negativity with the PD is for retaliatory reasons. They use anonymity to express their displeasure when there is a process to do so at the station itself. Do not tell me they will have your name and ro address because the process allows you to make a complaint anonymously so unless they are mind readers, they will not know who made the complaints. If you don’t make your complaint then they will never know what is going on with the officers.
