Ever have a problem with a dentist or any other so-called medical professional? Well, Hoboken411 reader Liz has some info she’d like to share with you all…

Illegal and immoral business practice…

To Whom It May Concern:

I am going to write to the attorney general but I also wanted to write an email to Hoboken411 because I know 95% of Hoboken reads this website. My husband and I are new to Hoboken. My husband made us an appointment at the dentist for a cleaning to see Dr. Anoos Luthra. I recently had a baby so it has been 8 months since I had a cleaning and over a year since I had any X-rays taken. The last time I had X-rays done everything was fine, I didn’t have one single cavity or problem. When I went for my cleaning with Dr. Luthra she took some X-rays , they told me I had 4 cavities that had to be filled immediately. They also told me one of my teeth was beyond repair and I would need a root canal. In addition to this, she told me the one cavity I had in my mouth would need to be repaired because it was metal and it would eventually wear off. I have NEVER heard of this.

She said I should probably start this process immediately (that visit). I was a little apprehensive and scared so I said I would just make an appointment. The doctor set up an appointment for me for a week later and she told me how much it would be. She said that the insurance will cover 80% so we would be responsible for covering 20%. She said she would “work with me” so the insurance would have to cover most and I would have to pay a minimal amount. That minimal amount was between $180-$200.00 per tooth. Plus a root canal which she wasn’t able to give me a quote on that. To cut this story short, I followed my instincts and set up an appointment with my childhood dentist back in Massachusetts.

I went to Dr. Luthra’s office to pick up my x-rays and they informed me they would need to make a copy and were going to charge me $50.00 for this. This in and of itself is absolute robbery. I brought the X-rays back to Massachusetts, made a special visit there (which is a 4 hour drive each way) to get my cavities taken care of. I had the appointment yesterday. I had three Dentists in my room all marveling over how a dentist can be such a quack. They said there was not one cavity in my mouth and they said that there was no way I would need a root canal. The dentists I went to see were at Brooklawn Dental in New Bedford, MA. They are a group of Dentists who have been practicing dentistry for over 30 years. They also stated that she should be reported immediately. I am so enraged that a DOCTOR would do this. Beyond that I am scared for people who go see this dentist and she ruins their entire mouth. Just so she can make some money. This is illegal and immoral. If you want to save your mouth as well as your bank account do NOT go to:

Interesting topic… Regarding root canals: you KNOW when you need one; I’ve never heard of a preventative root canal. Also, if you ever need one, go to an endodontist (basically a root canal specialist). They will do the complete treatment in one sitting and they know what they’re doing. See if you’re looking for a new dentist if you can find one that uses the latest technologies like laser treatment (my dentist (out in Nassau County) uses laser for smaller cavities so no need to get numb), digital x-rays, etc. There have been a lot of developments in dentistry so use of it!

I also had a bad experience with Dr. Luthra and now owe her 5,000$. She did 4 root canals which I now know were not all needed and then I had no money left for crowns. I finally left and was able to get my crowns covered under my insurance and when I told her she was shocked. I would definitley have to say be aware of this dentist.

Exact same experience with this dentist. Puts on a real show, but second opinion was completely contrary. Should be investigated.

I know I posted this on another thread but I, too, had an experience where I was told I had several cavities (which was odd as 6 months before I had none). I went for a second opinion and was told I had no cavities. That was 9 years ago and none of those “cavities” ever materialized. So I totally believe that dentists will unnecessarily drill healthy teeth to make a buck.

And a lot of the things being mentioned in this thread about other dentists I have heard for years…both the good (e.g., Dr. Farag) and the bad (the up-selling dentists).

All it takes is for them to scratch a little enamel from a tooth
for a cavity to appear!
