Hobokenpix: Noise offender!

Hoboken Photo of the Day – 10/15/2009

At least once per weekend, Hoboken Police are dispatched to the W Hotel, to find out why residents from neighboring 333 River Street are complaining about the noise coming from the Chandelier Room club. My guess is that it’s one of the outdoor patios, the loud music and shouting patrons. That’s city life, ain’t it?

Boo Hoo for the residents of 333 River, c’mon down to First St. where we are awakened nightly by the sounds of breaking glass during recycling pick up in the wee hours of the morning, people yelling at each other on the street after the bars close, and the occasional street fight.

333 River was there first. West of Washington, you need a variance to have outdoor seating for your restaurant, or at least that used to be the case in the 90s. I don’t know what the rules are on River Street, but 333 River is a rental building, so the tenants would not have received any notices from the zoning board, and apparently, their landlord Applied didn’t care enough.

Applied cared a great deal, as there was profit to be made when the project was approved. You realize that they were partners in the building of the W, right? Check out the Contact Us page, in the fine print.

That said, I suspect that the people from 333 River Street who are complaining are probably bitter that their view’s been obstructed (I would be). Rather than learning to deal with the sound by closing their windows and turning on a fan or such, they’ll bitch and moan and try to make someone else just as miserable as they are. I only say this because I walk down there late every night with my dog, and the sound is very rarely loud enough to bother a reasonable person in my opinion.

The unamplified human voice is exempt from the noise code, however, loud music is not. The music cannot exceed 50dBA after 10pm, measured at the 333 River property line.

So noise coming from a bar is “city life” but the hundreds of new topics complaining about similar “city life” issues created and commented about here aren’t?

While I’m here there was a very minor accident this morning by the school on 3rd a few blocks back from washington. There was a large utility truck with the guys working high up on some pole or wire (don’t remember company on the corner completely blocking the view of oncoming traffic…seems like they should be responsible for paying for a traffic officer (or crossing guard who many seem to think its their job to direct traffic even when no one is crossing) when working in position like that
