I'm also very willing to help out. I'd love to foster a dog where possible. I'm a dog owner who rescued a dog at North Shore Animal League in Long Island. It's the largest no-kill shelter in the nation supposedly. Very good people out there and they make sure all rescued dogs get spayed and neutered.

Please let me know how I can help.

I also recently created a facebook group called Hoboken Dog Owners and encourage everyone to search it out and join. Or email me and we can friend each other and i can send an invite. I'm hoping to use it to organize activites and events and give the dog owning community (and cat owners) a stronger voice to our local and state government. bradykp@gmail.com

I worked in newark near the shelter on, evergreen st?, the man who ran it was a absolute nut about the health and well being of the animals. He also ran a shelter in tinton falls and the popcorn zoo in lacey, all clean and well run. He must be doing cartwheels in his grave over this.

You're right, but LHS doesn't have space and with the rotten economy, the unwanted pet population has exploded.

I volunteer there, and it's so tough looking into the eyes of all those wonderful animals. I foster one or two now and then, but they just keep coming in each day. After a while, volunteers develop tunnel vision and just focus on the one or two that can be pulled, socialized, and homed quickly. Local rescues really need fosters.

I'm sure that there is a cost effective way to develop a shelter. Jersey City actually provided an old garage that has been expanded and renovated. It may be tough for Hoboken to give up an old city owned warehouse or garage, but a Hoboken dedicated shelter doesn't necessarily have to be there. Also, if a small shelter contracts with two small county municipalities and enjoys robust fundraising and volunteer efforts, a stellar and model facility can be developed.

It's great to see people giving e-mail addresses and showing real concern. Without a doubt, AHS' contract with Hoboken will end soon.

In response to fupa who said:

it might be more cost effective to give the contract to liberty humane society in jersey city than creating a small shelter in hoboken (though if there was one in hoboken, you bet i would be there couple times a week giving love to those poor souls!)

anyway, shoppegirl, here is my info: fupa.dupa.poopa@gmail.com

In response to shadrack who said:

The Hudson County SPCA closed because volunteers secured a non profit lawyer and a sympathetic judge wasn't swayed by the politics of the HCSPCA. Also, volunteers secretly photographed animals and gave damning statements to investigators.

So far, WNBC has taken an interest in the AHS story, but meanwhile, animals suffer. A small animal shelter that serves Hoboken is not a bad idea.

As one who volunteered at the HCSPCA, I think that a county wide facility is not a good idea. Large facilities are tough to run, and the politics to operate the facility efficiently hamper efforts to save animals.

If two small communities like Hoboken and West New York or Weehawken partnered to run a facility with one or two dedicated Animal Control Officers, it may not be cost prohibitive.

Finally, a shelter is only successful if there is a large contingent of volunteers and fosters to help socialize animals and find loving homes for them.

Kudos Shoppergirl28. This can be done.

PS I'd be very willing to take on Hoboken's stray dog and pet population for the contract of 60 grand a year as a private contract. Those dogs would never want to leave, they'd have it so good. I rehome, train, vet, feed, nurture, care AND LOVE many many many dogs for much much less.

So very tragic and sad. I hope something can be done for these poor animals who have no voice in this world. The caring people of this town have to speak for them.
