Poor animal shelter conditions in Newark

10/15/2009:

Hoboken411 reader Kimberly discovered some shocking information about a particular animal shelter in Newark, NJ – and hopes Hoboken can discontinue their relationship with them…

Associated Humane – Poorly run shelter

Apparently – the Associated Humane shelter in Newark is used by many municipalities (including Hoboken’s) as a depot for animals found or captured by the Animal Control Department.

For whatever reason, the shelter seems to be poorly run, understaffed and inhumane to the animals that are kept there, with god-awful conditions, dead animals, and a very low adoption rate.

Kimberly sent a letter to various individuals at City Hall and expects some kind of response from the City by tomorrow. She wanted to know what Hoboken’s relationship is with this shelter, and if we can find any better alternatives.

I’m also very willing to help out. I’d love to foster a dog where possible. I’m a dog owner who rescued a dog at North Shore Animal League in Long Island. It’s the largest no-kill shelter in the nation supposedly. Very good people out there and they make sure all rescued dogs get spayed and neutered.

Please let me know how I can help.

I also recently created a facebook group called Hoboken Dog Owners and encourage everyone to search it out and join. Or email me and we can friend each other and i can send an invite. I’m hoping to use it to organize activites and events and give the dog owning community (and cat owners) a stronger voice to our local and state government. bradykp@gmail.com

I worked in newark near the shelter on, evergreen st?, the man who ran it was a absolute nut about the health and well being of the animals. He also ran a shelter in tinton falls and the popcorn zoo in lacey, all clean and well run. He must be doing cartwheels in his grave over this.
