H & S Giovanni

5/15/2007:

Was milling around town and noticed for the first time that the sign on the side of the building doesn’t make any sense. Two signs mucked together. Did they think that by having a little bit of “New York” in their sign, that it’d somehow make it’s way into their pizza?

1/24/2007 Update:

Here’s what word on the street is saying about the whole Empire Fitness/Giovanni pizza situation.

 • Giovanni’s is closing the back dining room and moving it over to the Happy Nails space. This solution was was easiest since it didn’t require any costly re-location of the kitchen/oven area.
 • They’re putting a wall up and expanding the Gym southward.
 • The corner cell store space will also be part of Empire.

No word on when this renovation is expected to begin, but heard it was “as soon as possible”.

I love Gio’s, too. The man at the register could be a little more friendly, but the pizza is yummy. The slices are large enough for me– pepperoni’s my favorite :).

I love pizza, honestly I can eat it nearly every day. I have tried nearly every pizza place in hoboken and this is by far my favorite. It is exactly what you would expect from a classic pizzeria. Hot, fresh, crispy, cheesy, saucy, and simply delicious pizza that tempts you to come back again and again. Even though the guys making the pizza are not Italian, they do an awesome job; you don’t always have to be italian to make great pizza. I have lived in hoboken my entire life and I have just recently discovered that Gio’s has the BEST pizza in town, definitely better than Benny’s aross the street. Give this place a shot, you won’t be disappointed. Their calzones, white pizza, classic cheese slice, and sicilian are all great. I tried the caesar salad it, the lettuce wasn’t the freshest to me and it was soaked in dressing with bagged croutons, i would skip it. But definitely try the pizza and calzones, they are cheesy fresh and delicious!
Grimaldi’s is the best as far as I’m concerned, but I never go there. Why? Because it’s hell and gone from where I live and they don’t deliver! It’s a pizza place that doesn’t deliver. Think about that for a while. Plus the preachy story about their ongoing litigation over their name turns me off a bit. Just deliver my pizza, ok?
Um..
Grimaldi’s does deliver.
if you want this style of pizza, I would recommend Napoli pizza.
much better than Grimaldi’s.
and they cook the pizza all the way.
grimaldi’s always seems like it could use a few more minutes in the oven.
I guess this was all over like 6 months ago, but here goes. Ive been to every pizza place in town, and I agree with what another poster previously said. 7-star is very underrated, while some of the “high end” places are very over rated. Giovanni’s is very close to me, so I tend to go there a fair bit. The guy is gruff, but he’s ok. The russian sounding chick who works there a lot is just that – Russian. Don’t let her get on your back – she’s cool. They have a lot of Stevens traffic, so at certain times they get slammed – good for them, bad for you if you are expecting an on time and perfect pizza. Calzones, pasta, other stuff on the menu is solid if not exactly haute cuisine. Grimaldi’s is the best as far as I’m concerned, but I never go there. Why? Sure Giovanni’s isn’t fantastic, but there are eight other places that are barely better and charge a lot more – so why bother.
I would never eat at Grimaldis.
