A ticking time bomb deck!

8/27/2009:

I got the heebie jeebies when I spotted this rooftop deck on 3rd and Park the other day…

You won’t catch me here on St. Patty’s Day!

Not sure about you, but upon closer inspection – it appears that this rooftop deck may be showing some signs of aging. I sure hope they don’t have a massive party up there on St. Patty’s Day 2010 – I can foresee this thing cracking and drunks plummeting to certain injury!

The deck looks high but based on the pictures you cant really tell how it is being maintained. It looks like it was built properly.

You would have to get up there and see if the rails are still tight to see if it is unsafe… But it certainly is high, but so are most fireescapes. There are certainly more scare fireescapes in town.

It’s not the maintenance. It’s the general construction. Take a look at how those slats (either screwed or nailed) on the railing were installed from the outside. The tipping back of one of those chairs having a child or adult would be enough to pull the boards out. At least there would be a little more support if reversed. Very sloppy and dangerous carpentry.

It sure does look like an accident waiting to happen. All it’s gonna take is one drunken trip and hello Saint Hoboken.

I’m sure the Hoboken Building Department approved that, too.

I love how those cheap plastic reclined chairs are right up against those flimsy balusters nailed to fall away from the building’s ledge.
