QotD: Expanding Hoboken?
What is wrong with this concept?
I still think that back when I introduced this concept of “expanding” Hoboken into the Hudson River like they did over in Battery Park was a missed opportunity for our city. While we clamor over lame parks and open space, parking, etc – this doesn’t seem like a far-fetched idea – and can bring many good things to our city. I guess we’ll have to wait until more capable, forward-thinking individuals are running the show around here.
What purpose does that cove serve exactly?
Hoboken’s own Battery Park?

Was speaking to a business owner in town the other day – and he said he had “the perfect plan” for Hoboken. Here’s a rough outline of what he suggested (to the best of my recollection):
- The Hoboken Cove/Inlet by the uptown bridges is a waste – and goes largely unused.
- Construction companies would PAY Hoboken to dump their raw material landfill there.
- Get Federal Grant monies to build/construct the land.
- Generate Revenue: Demolish and sell the High School – and the Football Field (approx $50 million).
- Move H.S. and field to the new location – along with many other fields, courts and open space.
A whole neighborhood in Manhattan was built in the exact same manner – why not Hoboken?
QotD: What do you think of this concept?
See what you could put in that space?

Might be a good plan. The city planning committee should stew on this one and at the same time update the current master plan.

Rich Trem. mentioned this in his 2007 campaign for 2nd Ward council. This area was good enough to repair ships during the World War II and it will build the character of all in Hoboken, especially its youth. “Action is character” – F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Last Tycoon, 1941

A mini wet water kingdom would be cool! Just for residents, water slides, log flumes, tarzan swing, lazy river, that would be so much fun!!!! Stay out of kiddie pools!!!

Riddle… how do you waste the same space twice? (sounds great up until the part where you build a public high school on the most valuable land in NJ)

This would cost multiple billions of dollars. The only way to raise that kind of money is to fill the new space with thousands of new units of private residential or office development, which I am guessing you would be against.

Yes that would be a great idea! we could have a waterslide right from zimmer’s office to the river that will make it quicker for her to go “up the river”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a gated community where only residents with dogs are allowed to live?

Seems like a nice idea, but the crumbling waterfront isn’t making me confident about how it would be handled.

Making land is not re-inventing the wheel since it was done across the river. During the 2007 campaign for 2nd Ward council, I liked this idea and did not limit it to just this area. There are other locations, like the old Beth Steel pier area [now Applied Development] that can be filled in for usable precious property[Recreational Use]. Perhaps a tradeoff of their property for their building their inland proposal. Hoboken’s needs are expanding and it makes perfect sense to be able to extend on our existing 1.3 square miles. As for transportation, just extend the Hop a little more.

Exactly what do you think a contractor usually hauls to the dump? The fill required for a site like this must be Clean Engineered Fill and free of all materials that will decompose over time. The process must be carefully controlled otherwise a contractor might actually do what you are proposing – dump used lumber, damaged and unusable building materials, packing materials, cardboard, paper and a few left over lunches. Hoboken was once an island and the portion of the river that was filled in with trash and debris similar to what you are suggesting is now under CLINTON STREET and Clinton Street is now below sea level and sinking more each year. The whole thing is a pipe dream – if you really think it is a viable plan then hire an engineering firm to give you their professional advice. Do not ask a chump baker what he would when his experience has so far only been with sugar and egg whites.

At one point Hoboken Cove had $3 million of green acre funding and Roberts was going to get developers to pay for rest.
Green acre funding went to fix Sinatra Park soccer field , which should have been redone by the people who built it since they did it incorrectly.
Just like the developers were supposed to pay for walkway north .Sued to get out of paying -lost in court and then Menendez came up with $ 15 million in federal funding to pay for it instead.
Whenever they show you fancy pictures of parks(substitute your own word) right before an election -you know it is not going to happen

Get Federal Grant monies to build/construct the land
The Federal coffers are overflowing with surplus cash. I’m sure getting some will be a snap.

Hey why don’t we build a deck over the railyards and create a new neighborhood? Oh wait, that actually might happen.
