Readerpix: You only live once

Hoboken411 reader photo of the day – 8/10/2009

Hoboken411 reader HansBrix took some pictures of the helicopter / plane collision aftermath this past Saturday. Seemed like a fairly standard photo – until you noticed what was in the upper left hand corner…

I responded back to him and said “look at the person standing up paddling on their raft!” Well, Hans did some further research – and discovered this is a YoLo Board – a new phenomenon in the water recreation industry. Ironically, YoLo stands for “You Only Live Once!” And this girl was farily lucky she didn’t get pummeled by debris!

[Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Readerpix entry! – Note: one reader’s photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive – it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they’re in “landscape” mode, as opposed to the taller “portrait” modes… ]

I don’t think the riders of these boards are aware of the whirlpools that appear in these waters during tide changes. Many can be witnessed around the Sinatra Park area. I don’t think these boards stand a chance. You’re almost on top of these whirlpools before you can notice them churning.

I would not want to do that in this part of the Hudson River.

I saw a guy in Mystic, Ct doing this in full street clothing. I guess that’s confidence.
