More about Cammarano’s Directors
Tonight, the Hoboken City Council will review the directors Mayor Cammarano had chosen for his “cabinet.” Council President Dawn Zimmer said they “still need more time,” despite having a week already to individually review each recommended person. (WATCH LIVE VIDEO!)
Cammarano’s letter to Council Prez Zimmer
“Dear Council President Zimmer:
I write regarding your stated intention to postpone voting on resolutions at tonight’s City Council meeting which appoint Angel Alicea to the position of Public Safety Director, Theresa LaBruno to the position of Director of Health and Human Services, Todd Poole to the position of Director of Community Development, and John Pope to the position of Director of Environmental Services. In the spirit of cooperation, and as an indication of my willingness to work with the Council, I will not oppose the Council’s decision to postpone voting on these resolutions until August 5, 2009.
I take this step even though we are now more than three weeks into my Administration, and State Monitor Judy Tripodi and the Department of Community Affairs have expressed a strong preference for formally swearing-in Directors on Thursday, July 23, 2009 to facilitate governance, regardless of whether or how the Council acts at tonight’s meeting on the aforementioned resolutions.
I make this gesture not just to demonstrate my commitment to working with the Council, but also because, as a former Council member, I understand and appreciate the importance of Council’s advice and consent role, and its responsibility to thoroughly and fairly review each nominee. For these reasons, I did not submit nominees to the Council at the July 1st reorganization meeting, as is customary practice in municipal government. Moreover, it is why I sent each Council member all nominees’ resumes on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, along with an invitation to meet individually or as a group with each nominee at a time and place convenient for each Council member. To my knowledge, no Council member took advantage of this invitation.
At tonight’s Council meeting, my nominees will be available to answer any questions and concerns Council may have regarding their qualifications. They will also be available to answer questions at the August 5, 2009 meeting.”
