Hoboken Photo of the Day – 7/20/2009

Received this photo and press release earlier today. A couple residents who saw this gathering actually emailed 411 wondering “Which one of these guys is most likely to NOT be in elected office 3 years from now?”

Mayor Peter Cammarano was on hand to greet Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, along with Governor Jon Corzine and Assemblyman Ruben Ramos, Jr. at the unveiling of the brand new PATH train cars after they arrived at the terminal in Hoboken.

clarification; springs carry the load and cushion the vehicle (auto, truck, railcar, horse drawn carriage) as it travels over uneven surfaces. “shock absorbers” or shocks are gas/fluid tubes that function to smoot the compression and/or rebound of the springs on the vehicle. both the conventional springs and the shocks wear over time. both are fairly inexpensive to replace compared to replacing entire vehicles. there are millions of new technologies and systems being applied in the marketplace today, but the shocks on the current PATH cars do not have much of that.

“they should want to retire the old cars ASAP because the cars basically have no shocks;”

That’s pretty much literally correct. They use springs in heavy rail cars, shocks are relegated to passenger vehicles and very light duty trucks.

Regardless, Hoboken is going to the the red-headed stepchild of the PATH system. Look at the cuts they’ve made to Hoboken service over the last 3-4 years. All their efforts are concentrated on the NWK-WTC line, and the stations in between.

the PATH is really starting to piss me off. they have literally dozens of in-car posters (and maybe even station ones) touting the “new PATH” and the new cars that are supposed to be coming in ’09. here we are basically SEVEN months into ’09 and the new cars are nowhere to be found on the Hoboken -33rd line. the first time i saw a new car was in FEBRUARY when going traveling back from a Devils game in Newark. now we are talking 5 months later – still nothing on the Hoboken line. they give their usual schpiel about testing and blah-blah-blah. how long does it take to test a damn car that runs on tracks!? if they’re so worried about safety, they should want to retire the old cars ASAP because the cars basically have no shocks; it’s like riding a freakin’ horse-drawn carriage.

poor communication is what it comes down to – inarguably. if it takes time, communicate that. communicate. give a schedule. they must know. why can’t we know?

There were no “new” path trains in the station yesterday or today…was this another one of those things they did 6 months ago where they pull the train in so people think the new trains are coming…but we end up on the old junkers.
