Retropix: Viaduct

5/11/2009:

[Retropix week! Will feature some old school retro photos, postcards and drawings of the Hoboken area from years back all week!]

Hoboken Photo of the Day – 5/11/2009

“From Hoboken to the Heights”
Hoboken fronts on the Hudson River accross from Manhattan. The Palisades, a line of steep cliffs which rise nearly vertically, separate Hoboken from Jersey City and Union City (part of Union City was once called West Hoboken). Various cuts, tunnels, trestles, elevators, staircases, roads and inclines bridged the elevation. Many of them like the Ferry Street Trestle Hoboken, the Inclined Cable Railway and Hoboken Wagon Elevation are now gone.

PS – if you have retro images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive – send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description – if desired!!

I think I see a parking space on 14th street!

This trolley apparently ran near 2nd street. Does anyone know the exact route? Are there any remaining pieces? Also, riding north on the HBLR, you can see an old footing on the side of the Palisades between the 9th St. station and the 14th St. Viaduct. Does anyone know what it originally supported? An earlier trolley? A road that predated the Viaduct?
