Gotta say, came into town around 7p, and it was GREAT. Clear, no back-ups anywhere, but cops in place guiding the traffic anyway, justin case it did get backed up. So thrilled and a bit weirded out that it was so smooth via Holland Tunnel approach. The crowd by Maxwell Place park, to and from, was very well-behaved. Well-done, city! 14th street piers blocked off? That sucks, but if Applied owns it, I guess it is their prerogative. I wonder what they’re doing with the spaces?

I just noticed … it appears that some of my suggestions from two weeks ago made the playbook. I don’t presume to take credit for it, but I’m impressed with myself here. (Unless it all goes to hell in a handbag, in which case I’ll deny ever making the suggestions!)

Transit suggestion — maybe folks can park at UBS and watch from the parkland over there in Weehawken? There’s lots of space there, near Lincoln Harbor transit stop on the light rail.

Another suggestion — there is an unused parking lot at the north end of the harbor separating Hoboken and Weehawken. Use it.

Another suggestion — diagonal parking all along 15th and 16th Streets west of Willow.

Another suggestion — free parking at the municipal lots, one day only.

Another suggestion — encourage folks to do park-and-ride from Tonnelle and Port Imperial, then take the light rail to UBS. (Run full length trains, and a lot of them.) Block off the road that runs past the Sheraton and (for once) use it as a pedestrian pathway. The city can put a zillion port-a-potties on the cobblestone area of Garden Street next to Park-on-Park.

Another suggestion — no cars on Sinatra. Make ‘em park in the municipal lot.

Respectfully, it's not martial law. He's got to prove that he's not the bendover-boy for the bar owners, and that he's going to improve Quality of Life in this town. On top of that, Hoboken will be a great place to do some stupid stuff tomorrow night, if one were so inclined. He's just realizing that, "Hey, I'm the mayor, and people are depending on me." It's a big responsibility. Now, I've thrashed him here and there on these pages in the past, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this chore. He needs this to go well, and it seems as if he aims to deliver. (In case you're wondering, I'm a bit impressed, actually. I want him to succeed, but not in the way that the party machine was hoping.) In response to escaped68 who said:

Also: not really sure what I just saw, but something sketchy was/is going down on/around the 14th Street pier. We took a walk out to the end of the pier tonight and when we got to the end, a small raft with an outboard motor and two riders came whizzing along out of the darkness. No lights except for a flashlight held by one of the riders and as they passed the pier, some guy tossed a phone to a woman and ran back to corner of 14th + Hudson, where I think he’s still standing. The boat continued south. Very sketchy.

They will be checking proof-of-residency and photo ID for people who are driving uptown and who try to use the parking garages uptown.

The proof of residency thing is just something I heard from a friend and I have no idea where she got her info from. Anyway as a result of all the craziness I decided to change my plans and get out of dodge altogether. Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th! In response to hoboken411 who said:

by the way, do we know WHERE this id check will happen? If it is going to happen... In response to Litteredboken who said:
