Hoboken Photo of the Day – 4/29/2009
I walk by this place all the time – and always forget to ask if anyone remembers this place on 12th St. between Garden & Park. When was it open? When did it close? Was it any good?

PS – if you have images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive – send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description – if desired!!

oh, how i miss grube’s! spent a good part of my childhood there. they had a video game before the revamp into a ‘gourmet’ deli. i also remember they used to have a big jar of pickled pigs’ feet on the counter. ew. the old mr. grube was so nice. he used to write down the prices of the things you bought on a brown paper bag and tally it up by hand. his son (tom, i think?) took it over and gourmetified it.
what i REALLY miss, though, is miguel’s bodega on the corner of 12th and park. they sold everything, from panty hose to quarter drinks to tennis balls. i think miguel moved to florida.

It was nice. Ran by a man and his son. Typical deli stuff and some hot foods. In the 80’s they had some video arcade games and the local kids would hang out there. Nice to have neighborhood places like this.

“Grube’s” that’s “Old Hoboken”!! And they moved around in Hoboken!
My first memory of their deli is when they were on 12th and Willow Avenue – where Fox Hill Gardens is now.
Next they were on 8th and Washington Street – I think it’s Vito’s now.
Then, I believe, they moved to the corner of 11th and Hudson Street – lots of business there from Maxwell House Coffee!
Willi’s last place was the store on 12th, between Garden and Park.
Willi Grube , his brother Henry and sister-in-law Hilda had a great place on 12th and Willow in the 60s – all were German, and I remember great potato salads and wonderful sandwiches.
All of them have died in the meantime…
Wonderful people and good German food, salads, cold cuts etc. – I kinda miss that in Hoboken!!

I would stop at Willies on my way to school in the late 60’s/early 70’s.
Up against the big window he had a large table, little kid height, where he had the treats laid out. Hostess fruit pies, boxes of animal crackers (with the string on the box so you could carry it like a pocketbook), individual crullers, etc.
When I could save up the 10 cents, I would go for the animal crackers.

What is going on there now? I walk past this place every day and the only thing I can see is a chia pet next to the door. Sometimes there is a cat there too. The lights are on sometimes…

Long gone.
Now residential, w/extended Grube family members still there, I hear, living on both floors.
Sometimes cats are visible, poking noses out on the 12th St. street-level, noodling around what was the old storefront….
