Readerpix: Swimmin’ 70’s

4/27/2009:

Who says jumping in the Hudson is bad?

An anonymous Hoboken411 reader sent in these GREAT shots – which, based on the socks – leads me to guess late 1970’s (or even 1980)… Appears to be exactly where the new park at Maxwell Place is.

These days – jumping in the Hudson causes a big scene – but back in the day, the reader said “you could jump in the river whenever you wanted!”

[Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Readerpix entry! – Note: one reader’s photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive – it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they’re in “landscape” mode, as opposed to the taller “portrait” modes… ]

These are awesome! I remember when my dad would take my little brother and I fishing and for a quick dip during warm summer days. How I miss those good old days… Thanks for sharing anonymous!

“You could swim in the water if you wanted”

But would you want to?

As a newcomer, I love seeing pics of the old Hoboken.

“over run by viet nam vets”: what i mean by that is returning soldiers were alienated and often times hooked on drugs. they were ill suited to return to the work force, were dealing with depression, or worse; post-traumatic stress disorder. on top of that the country was grinding thru watergate and then the brief Ford administration which was producing a weakening economy. coupled with the near bankruptcy of NYC and this region had high unemployment. the youth in the area, and especially the returning vets, had no jobs and dim prospects in 1975. Carter came in and flushed the economy even further down the toilet. THAT is what i meant by “over run”. btw i had 2 uncles and an aunt that went to Viet Nam. one came back a heroin adddict, another a “born again”.

These are fantastic photos, I’d love to see them full size. These are from the mid 70’s for sure. And while there were problems in NYC and in Hoboken, the quality of life overall was a lot better…people were more laid back. They had fun.
