Stumbled across this post from Rasmussen Reports that says…
Just 53% Say Capitalism Better Than Socialism
“Only 53% of American adults believe capitalism is better than socialism.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 20% disagree and say socialism is better. Twenty-seven percent (27%) are not sure which is better.
Adults under 30 are essentially evenly divided: 37% prefer capitalism, 33% socialism, and 30% are undecided. Thirty-somethings are a bit more supportive of the free-enterprise approach with 49% for capitalism and 26% for socialism. Adults over 40 strongly favor capitalism, and just 13% of those older Americans believe socialism is better.
Investors by a 5-to-1 margin choose capitalism. As for those who do not invest, 40% say capitalism is better while 25% prefer socialism.
There is a partisan gap as well. Republicans – by an 11-to-1 margin – favor capitalism. Democrats are much more closely divided: Just 39% say capitalism is better while 30% prefer socialism. As for those not affiliated with either major political party, 48% say capitalism is best, and 21% opt for socialism.”

Unfortunately, I don’t understand why more people refuse to respond to your point in all these instances the topic comes up. Cogent, indeed. And the prediction valid.

Modern western socialist states leave the means of production largely in private hands although they are not against taking control when the situation demands it.
But if we are going to talk about socialism in the absolute sense then the word is used far too often and in inappropriate circumstances.
Using the absolute definition, then socialized medicine is not necessarily an example of socialism. Certainly any solution offered in the United States doesn’t qualify.

Definition please. I won’t respond to that definition. But I’m really hoping you offer up your accurate definition. I’m just hoping you’ll clarify what the accurate definition is, you still haven’t done that.
Please define soc ialism. And I won’t respond, tear apart, or post anything about that definition you supply.

MR, re post: 38… I guess no one ever addresses it because what are they going to come back with: It is good to have all our food resources concentrated in the hands of a few agribusiness conglomerates here and in South America that are systematically destroying local food supplies…
When most people think about where food comes from they stop at “the supermarket.”

So cia lism is a broad group of economic theories in which the government is, in some form, involved in production of goods and services. That involvement can range from strict regulatory controls to outright ownership to subsidizing specific industries.

jscirish, it’s a really good topic which broadens to this whole discussion on capitalism vs soc ialism in the context of farming which people would rather ignore. I find it interesting. If you begin a thread on this with Hoboken411, I’d definitely participate. Otherwise, it’ll get lost in this thread as politics would diminish it.
