Final Four Saturday

4/4/2009:

The madness will end soon

ncaa-basketball-logo.gifTwo games left before the NCAA Championship game on Monday. Tonight, we have Michigan State taking on Connecticut at 6:07pm – and Villanova against North Carolina at 8:47pm. Connecticut is favored by 4.5 points – and North Carolina by 7 points.

But who do you think will win it all?

Speaking of Villanova…

Hoboken411 reader Furey wanted readers to know that if you’re interested in the Villanova / North Carolina game – that you could head down to Mulligan’s (159 1st Street) where they have $2 Yuenglings and Bud Lights – as well as $10 buckets of Bud Light Bottles. These specials will run the length of the game.
Are you trying to imply Nova couldn’t win a big game ? LOL How do you make the Final Four and not win a big game all season ? That’s just a laughable claim. Ask ‘Cuse (fellow #3 seed 2x), Duke, Pitt (2x) and Marquette if Nova can win a big game. They only “big” games I can recall that they lost were the 2 games vs L’Ville and one was lost on the last play. They had every means to win, UNC was just better.

Yes, Nova certainly had some poor shot choices, but to the trained eye, many of them are the result of UNC’s great defense. Their role players had big games where as Nova’s didn’t (like Anderson & Clark). Hopefully next year, Yarou whatever his last name picks up some of Dante’s production – if not Nova will need a big big year from the Corey’s.
National spotlight wasn’t the issue. Nova’s played in huge games all season. It’s a veteran team. It came down to talent simply, UNC is just better all around with better players.

Credit UNCs defense too – Nova chucked up alot of 3s, but many were contested so that can explain partly the poor shooting %. Same can’t be said for UNC’s 3-point looks, unfortunately.
I don’t buy that UNC were a better team defensively. Nova did more to shoot themselves in the foot with their shot choices and lack of producing points on turnovers. Easy shots missed. Far too many 3 points shot. Nothing that I saw that UNC created.

Where I do give credit is UNC’s offense. If you look at UNC’s 3 pointers they were out in outer space hitting some early 3’s that were crippling. There was nothing Nova could do but watch the guys set up from NBA range and drill 3’s (at least in the first half).

As for Nova being on the national stage, if you watched all season it was the big games that they (mostly) choked away. They barely beat Pitt, with a last second shot. I was happy to see that win, but wasn’t shocked that in the final four game that the ride was over. Was hoping they would keep playing their A game. But they didn’t.

Hats off to NC. Brought their A game at least for the first half. Those 3’s were killer. If Nova just could have created points on those turnovers they would have completely been in the game. Just seemed the national spotlight was too much for them, they played far too sloppy.

we really played poorly. i suppose it would have been easier to travel .5 miles to Mulligans vs. 575 to Motown, but i don’t regret it. we’ll be back, in houston – in two years.
