Grand Convenience: Doomed

10/7/2010 Update:

Grand Convenience fizzles out uptown

You’d think that in a residential area, a “convenience” store would do OK – selling basic essentials, beverages, newspapers, coffee and snacks. And with their close proximity to Clearview Cinemas, that smarter shoppers would sneak snacks in instead of paying through the nose for over-priced garbage.

Whatever the case – it wasn’t enough for Grand Convenience to stay in business.

Maybe theater attendance is fairly low too?

See what once was – after the jump…

4/1/2010 Update:

“The secret around the corner”

Since people walk from all directions towards the Clearview Cinemas Movie Theater in Hoboken – some folks are just discovering that Grand Convenience is just steps away! (One customer called it “the secret around the corner.”)

Grand Convenience has been open for a year now, and is one of the small businesses in town we’d like to see survive. So instead of paying “movie theater prices” for a handful of goobers, why not swing by before your next flick? They even have buy two-get one free specials on candy and snacks! A win-win situation: save a few bucks, and help local business at the same time!

Coming later this spring is NJ Lottery Tickets as well.

3/19/2009:

Good news for NW Hoboken residents. A new convenience store, “Grand Convenience” opened up recently on Grand Street (between 13th and 14th).

It’s a small, unassuming shop with basic necessities you’d find in most convenience stores. The person working there, Felix, seemed quite nice, and said that the owner Alie is going to tailor the store to the customer’s requests – adding or removing products as necessary and changing the hours as needed. They’re adding additional display cases in the future for items like sandwiches and basic vegetables.

It’s a good spot next to the upcoming Clearview Cinemas (for those that want to sneak soda in the theater instead of paying $6.00 for sugar water.)

Description: Convenience store. Coffee, drinks, snacks, cigarettes, packaged food, candy, condiments.
Address: 1300 Grand Street (in between 13th and 14th), Hoboken, NJ 07030
Phone: 201-683-7903

All that I have to say to Hoboken411 is yeah, thats what you think…

This happened in December, they might have changed their policy, but i highly doubt it.

I thought that I was being smart when i purchased my movie theater snacks at a lower price than the obsurdity of the movie theater. Upon walking back into the theater with my bag of goodies the attendant said that NO OUTSIDE FOOD WAS ALLOWED IN THE MOVIE THEATER!! I WAS APPALLED!!! I was not about to pay 6 dollars for a small popcorn! So I did what any smart person would do and stuffed as much as I could in my jacket… when I was watching the movie, a separate attendant also commented that there was no outside food or drink.

I find this utterly disgusting that the movie theater company would do this!

Honestly, what’s with Hoboken and people being appalled?

I see it a couple times per month on here relating to the most mundane issues… Really??? It’s THAT bad??

C’mon, you can’t be taken notice of as a Hoboken blogger until you’ve earned the wings of being appalled.

Up until one is about 25 it’s okay to be outraged, but as haggish age wears on, we one day need be appalled. Word has it they are going to add it to the “Comment Guidelines”.

I’m not proud if it, but I’m old enough that in polite society I’ve been aghast.

Wait, you were appalled that the movie theater told you you couldn’t bring outside food in?! Welcome to reality. The 1000% marked up popcorn is their business.

Do you go to a restaurant and bring your own food with you and complain that you’re not going to spend $14 on pasta that you can buy at Shop Rite for 89 cents?

I have discretely brought candy into the theater that I purchased at Grand Convenience, but I wouldn’t be outraged if they told me I couldn’t.

Movies theaters have been doing this for decades. I didn’t know there was anyone that didn’t know you have to be sneaky.

Agreed. I’ve brought food and drinks into this theater no problem, you just can’t be obvious about it.

I really like this convenience store, they are always extremely friendly and the price for a bottled soda is much cheaper than going to Rite Aid.

Yea, I noticed the same thing strollerdad. He must be a VIP, notice the police shield in the front windshield, guess that means hooters Pd won’t be issuing any tickets. Hoboken doesn’t need the money

Great place, exactly what we need in this area. I recently stopped by to check it out and the woman behind the counter was very pleasant. I noticed the daily specials, which is a plus as well as the tables they soon will bring out once it becomes warmer. Sorry strollerdad but didn’t notice any doubled parked car in front of this store!

Nice place but I hope the stuff that they get to cater to the clients is good. It’s too close to the 24 hour rite aid to make it a place to buy cigs, milk, soda, etc. except once in a while. Also, what’s the deal with the red range rover that is double parked outside their almost every day, or parked in the permit only spots without a permit?
