bradykp---I know the Onion is supposed to be funny but--you're right---there are too many dog owners who behave like that which is sad. I wish everyone who wanted a dog fully understood how much time, money and attention needs to be invested in the dog.
yeah, when i sent that to a few friends they said they didn't even realize it was an onion article. it's sad that a satirical article is mostly true in this area.

there's lots of good dog owners in our town though, it's the sour apples that leave the largest memories though. it's easy to forget all the times you don't step in dog shit, but hard to forget those times you do.

the best thing you can do with most dogs when they are jumping is put your hands behind your back and completely ignore them. by refusing to give them what they want, they learn to not do that.

it takes a resilient person to do that, and you obviously can't do it with the baby in hand. if it doesn't work on it's own, combining it with pushing your knee out so the dog jumps into your knee (not so that you are kneeing the dog) is another effective way - as someone pointed out.

the guy is an idiot honestly. the dog could hurt your or your baby, even it is being completely playful. my puppy is getting a little jumpy, so I always give people a heads up that he might start hopping if they come pet him. he can't do much damage - but I have no problem with other people telling him "no - off" in a stern way. i also tell him.

dog owners need to be more responsible.

i think this describes a lot of the people in NYC and Hoboken with dogs:

I'll backup those that are saying the laws are also for the dog's protection. I was using paint striper on our gate in '07 and someone came by with their dog on extra long leash, to long for her to see what I was doing and that maybe she should steer her pup away from mess on the walk were I was working.

Re: post #9 Mooshu---You're quite right about unleashed dogs possibly running into traffic. A friend of mine had a dog and lived in Boston. She knew there was a leash law but kept her dog off the leash. She said she interpreted the leash law to mean that as long as her dog walked by her side, a leash wasn't necessary. Well, one day the BF took the dog for a walk--unleashed of course--and they walked by somebody's yard. The dog in the yard charged up to the fence and started barking. My friend's dog panicked, ran into the street and got hit by a car. Her dog was never fully recovered from its injuries and ended up dying from parvovirus. Just saying, no matter how well a dog is trained or how gentle their temperment is, things can happen---running into the street, biting someone... The owners of the above mentioned Pit Bulls and the inconsiderate guy in the condo, need to be aware that they could end up getting sued should something bad happen.

Furey has a very good point. I am a total dog person and love when dogs jump up for attention, but not everyone else does. I don't have a dog, but when I'm walking one, I respect that and don't let dogs approach people unless the people say it's OK. Most dog owners are considerate, but some really need to be reprimanded, and if it's rudely, so what?

Great suggestion, Tama. I've been to a couple of Joana's classes at the Elks Club, and the canine student was pretty successful at learning the ropes. :D
Unless in an aggressive mode (ears back/lip curled, hair on the spine on end), chasing is usually play for most dogs. The more you run away, the more they chase---it's a game. If you feel safe enough to do it, stop and start chasing them in the direction they came from, to get them back where they started & away from you.
If a pit bull chases me, I'm not running back at it anymore than I'm running at someone with a gun, even if the man aiming it claims it is not loaded.
