Unemployed in Hoboken?

2/24/2009:

What do you do all day?

Hoboken411 reader Ryan was wondering what unemployed Hoboken residents are doing these days!

So I created this entry to share any ideas you might have that would be helpful for other jobless souls in town. For instance:

 • Are there any helpful career resources that you’re currently using? If so, where?
 • What is your favorite free WiFi hotspot? (Speaking of WiFi, I sort of updated the Free WiFi list on 411 today, feel free to mention any I’ve missed)
 • How long can you sustain living in Hoboken? Do you have a lot of savings? What have you cut back on?
 • What would be your next steps? Move back home? Get roommates? Go to a cheaper area?
 • How many resumes have you sent out? How is the job market? What are your job prospects like? How many interviews have you gone on?
 • Would a weekly “We’re Jobless” Meetup be something you’d like to attend? Where you could exchange tips, leads and other useful information with others in the same boat?
 • Have you become depressed? Lost the drive? Feel hopeless? Drink more?
 • Would you ever consider taking a lower-end job just to make ends meet?

While many people feel the economy is going to suffer for quite a while before any substantial improvements are seen, I sure hope it doesn’t wreck the country the way folks Glenn Beck and Gerald Celente are saying!

So what say you?

But knowing that times are tough all over….
Really, wtf is “agile methodology”?
Who came up with that oblique nomenclature?

Maybe it’s short-hand for your industry, but for the “uninitiated,” it reads as pure, utter bat-guano-speak.

IMHO, that’s part of the problem.
Well I used to own a condo in Hoboken but the mortgage had become too much so I recently sold and am now renting (still in Hoboken). Not sure what the next step would be because (luckily) I saved a lot when I was working and catch freelance jobs once in awhile but when I had to move recently, I had a friend and a family member offer to let me stay with them if I needed to so I guess that would be my next step, thought I’m hoping I’ll never have to use it. I’ve been saving money by: I cut down on going out to eat/ordering in, driving only when I have to, doing more research on coupons and discounts and such. My favorite WiFi spot is The Little Grocery since it is so close to where I live. I’ve gone on about 3 interviews, one which I am waiting to hear back from. I’ve sent dozens of resumes for every position from the area I have the most experience in to an executive assistant, having had few results. I usually look at newspapers, on Craig’s List, Idealist, Career Builder and Monster. Just as an aside, one of my parents used to be a SVP for a Fortune 500 company and has told me that she had found many fine employees on Monster. So for people who think Internet job application is fruitless and those who feel that their resume has gone into a black hole when… Read more »
There are soo many qualified individuals out of work due to this economic downturn
The should band together, storm City Hall and toss out/replace the thugs, bums and fatboys who’ve destroyed this town. It’ll give them something to do and may help reinvigorate Hoboken.
